Is it me ???

I've been a postie for the grand total so far of 7 weeks.

I've been reading this and other forums all that time, so that i could do the job with my eyes open and know what to expect.

I've been reading about:

1) P&L - We don't do it
2)Not being able to tag your 40 mins on to the end of your shift - We do it everyday
3)not being paid overtime - Got paid every Minute
4)Managers being of questionable parentage - Welllll Maybe
5)Bullying - Not seen it - not heared about it - not had it
6)Walks too long - 600 addresses inc 6 flats, drives, and terrace house - still finish 45mins early PLUS meal Relief
7)un helpfull del drivers - Not had one yet
8)Complaints from customers - not yet
9)etc etc etc

I know 7 weeks is nothing and after 20 years i might be singing a different tune and by no means am i bragging but our DO seems pretty s**t hot compared to what some of you guys are going through...... Is it me??

Early days young man early days i do hope for you and others
sake the job is still here in 20 years (i seriously doubt it) enjoy it as much
as you can, it was a good job until not that long ago but between a piss
poor management and recent governments determined to run this once
great service into the ground then i fear the worst, sorry to sound so
bleak but it's the way the job has made a great number of us feel but as i
said make the most of while you can as it may not be here much longer

Well most of office have problems. If you say everything is true then you are lucky one to work in right office. How many walks in your office. As smaller one can be more effective than major one.

Just don't expect it to last, and it will pick up more work next month as the christmas push begins.

I thought that too, I've been in the job for nearly 3 years and at first didn't recognise a lot of what was being said on here but the issues can be quite subtle and they build up over a period of time. Managers do treat you differently when you're new and you can get away with a fair bit at first but gradually it changes.
As far as other drivers and posties are concerned tho, apart from the odd dickhead you find in any job, everyone is always really helpful and friendly.
I always get my o/t without any problems and can have my meal relief whenever I like.

No it's highly variable from area to area and largely dependent on how strong the union is in each area or even in each office. We have a good group of reps in a relatively strong area.

As for the lack of bullying managers, no problem with drivers, meal relief whenever and however long you want etc, that is because a) we are still in summer traffic and b) still job and finish in your office. Same as ours. And we finish much earlier than you and there are plenty of walks with around 500 DPs. So there is little pressure on managers in this circumstance. No one will be booking any extra for extended delivery, the overtime will just be the standard stuff on the board. That said, our office doesn't usually even come under much pressure during the winter. However, when we were going through a period of doing the job properly (after they introduced lapsing, ie taking another part of walk out before you start), which was also doing the winter period, suddenly the managers turned in a big way and meal relief had to be taken at an exact specific time etc.

That said, we are getting P & L soon, so I expect things to change again.

Our office is similar at the moment, but the future is accelerating towards us at an ever more ominous pace. I sometimes finish a bit early on a Monday or Tuesday, but that's about it. Some folk in our office finish at 12 every day. And the idiots don't get what the problem is.

Yep, not a great time to be 7 weeks into the job on a contract! They let go 5 of ours at one stage a couple of years back. Unbelievably they then hired another load of them who may well get now permanent deals. Feel really sorry for some of the 5 let go a couple of years back. One was distraught and nearly laid out the DOM when he told him straight out they'd be taking on more contract people. People say the managers have no choice but they f***ing do! Right down to the line managers.

The honeymoon period will soon be over. Crates of flats waiting you in September. Cranking up of D2Ds and oh! just a few more parcels and packets to wet your appetite as the onslaught gains pace towards christmas, and you might be lucky enough to be able to drag it through a month of snow like we had last December, with no snow chains for your feet, which incidentally we have still not been supplied with, even though the new winter is rapidly coming upon us.
