RE: Romec 2007 Pay Claim

We recently announced the results of an industrial action ballot for all Romec engineering and Admin grades. Our members over whelming supported the ballot by 12 votes to 1.

Having made the business aware of the decision we continued to correspond and meet with Romec to negotiate a final agreement that would meet the aspirations of our members. A final meeting took place on Tuesday 21st August 2007 where unfortunately we were unable to make any clear progress. In-fact coupled with the 'strings' that any improved offer would have the business have indicated that it will be their intention to continue with the introduction of the GPS navigational system by executive action within the next fortnight. We have done everything we possible can to avoid proceeding with industrial action however we have now reached the last resort and are calling a 24 hour strike.

All Romec members both engineering and Admin grades will take 24 hours industrial action at the start of their shift commencing on or after 6am Friday 31st August 2007 until 6am Saturday 1st September 2007. We have decided to take the 24 hour action so that all members validate the strongly supported industrial action ballot but we will be looking at possible different types of action for the future.

A letter has been sent to all individual members participating in the ballot and it will be our intention to keep branches and members informed over the next seven days in respect of issuing guidance for any picket lines we intend to set up and additionally special guidance for call-out arrangements that will take place on the weekend after the action. Am I right in thinking, that if the romec engineers go out, then mail centers cannot run any machines under health and safety rules ( a minimum of 2 required ) ????

Sadly the engineers that maintain our machines are Royal Mail engineers and have already taken action with their Mail Centre Colleagues!

Romec engineers do the general maintenance of Royal Mail Buildings and equipment! (lights, frames, mail carrying equipment)

Maybe we should all report an avalanche of faults on ROMEC strike days to give management the run around.

whoever they are and whatever they do it will be another weapon in our arsenal should we need to restart our rolling strike dates. . . . this can only be good news for our campaign . . .well done and thankyou ROMEC

Romec Industrial Action - Friday 31st August 2007



The purpose of this LTB is to clarify the position of members within Royal Mail, Quadrant Catering and Romec Cleaners regarding the official industrial action due to take place for all Romec engineering and Admin grades. It is also to provide guidance to branch officials on this matter.

As far as the legal position is concerned, none of the grades mentioned above are part of the official dispute. They have not been balloted for industrial action and this has been a separate ballot conducted on behalf of Romec engineering and Admin grades for their own pay claim for 2007. Therefore there is no existence of a trade dispute with either Royal Mail or Quadrant. Due to the fact that Romec cleaners pay is dealt with separately once again there is no trade dispute on their pay award. Therefore all of the grades mentioned above should report for work as normal, any industrial action on part of any group of employees will be deemed unofficial.

Whilst understanding the complexities and anxieties of the situation our official advice to all branches is that any picket lines should stand aside and invite our Royal Mail, Quadrant and cleaning colleagues to go into work. It is important for all of us to remain organised and disciplined throughout this dispute and for our members to respect the position of their fellow grades and understand it will be very difficult circumstances for all of them.

Branches are required as a matter of urgency to give this LTB the widest possible circulation within their branch, in particular units that may be involved in the dispute.

We have also attached CWU guidelines for picketing and would appreciate the widest possible circulation within the branch.
