So she starts working for RM in 2000 and looking at the story was made up to an Acting Manager around a year after? And they wonder why she was not respected.

Not saying any of this was right or fair but then how right or fair is it to be bossed around by someone who's only been there a year and obviously can't hack it as a manager? And probably couldn't hack it as an OPG before becoming a manager as is often the case. :Boo hoo!

I am amazed by your comment.

In my view, if somebody does their job well, they are deserving of respect. What on earth has the fact that she had only been in RM a year got to do with the degree of respect she should be accorded ?

I bet if you'd read that she had been made up to an Acting Manager just before the bullying started, your line of argument would be 'she'd never been promoted in the previous nine years, and they wonder why she was not respected when she was suddenly made up to an Acting Manager' :no no

I think your post reveals the sort of attitudes that forced this woman to have to fight her corner

Sorry but how the hell would the Armed Forces operate if you could not be put in charge straight away, and how do you know if someone can "hack" being a manager without actually making them one.

When I was "in" we had 40 year old WO1 and WO2s (most senior non commissioned ranks) being directed and ordered by 21 year old First Lieutenants, I saw nothing wrong in that.

The problem in this case is 2 fold. Royal Mail failed because they do not recognise Man Management as a skill, if they had trained her properly to deal with difficult subordinates it may not have gone this far.

The other is that the people named treated her very poorly, either because she was a female or she was a manger its difficult to tell. They thought, I think, that it was a laugh what they were doing, and individually it might have been. But all added up it became Bullying and Harassment, and they should have recognised it and either calmed it down, or used official channels if they thought what she was doing was wrong.

I am sorry but we cannot complain that Manager B&H us and then turn a blind eye to posties doing it to Managers if we do then we are no better than them.

I think sexism is a PC word and i hate to use it but it is rife in Royal Mail.I have not worked long for Royal Mail but everyday i hear crude comments and inuendos in the office. To me it's water of a duck's back and banter is banter, but a more sensitive soul might not see it that way.

I'm going off past personal experiences. There have been times in the office I've worked in that people have been made up to Acting Manager very shortly after joining the company. In the main the reason they've become maangers is because they can't be arsed with delivery. In 100% of these cases there has been a few gripes about them "only being here 5 minutes" and so-on. And in all these cases the managers have not had enough know-how about the job to effectively manage and overcome problems with deliverys. We've had people managing the driving duties who've never done a driving duty. People who've only done 1 or 2 different walks having to run the rule over 70/80 different walks.

In my personal view the line managers job (or any similar role) is best done by somebody with comprehensive knowledge of the in's and outs of that particular office and area. Over the last 10 years the managers jobs are being took up by people who don't have this knowledge and thus find it nigh on impossible to resolve issues. They are then left with one option which is simply repeating the bullshit figures and computer data fed down to them from above when it comes to resolving problems.

The best way of appointing managers would be to pull a postie aside who knows the job and area well. Knows who the workers and shirkers are and as such can differentiate between genuine problems and workshy bullshitters. When you've got that person then send them off for a few weeks to learn the middle management stuff. I find it very unlikely that this type of person will have only worked here a year.

Your second point about nine years and what my argument would have been is presumptious at best. :no no

In short - RM are constantly picking managers who aren't equipped to do the job. This soon becomes apparent. Respect for that manager is lost. Doesn't excuse the bullying but it's going to happen again and again if RM don't equip their managers properly. And if the managers not equipped properly then neither are the workforce.

Both the process of applying for, and the appointment of, a managerial position has to be open and above board.

Your method would attract claims of patronage and favouritism. The poor unfortunate who found themselves promoted in this manner would undoubtedly lose the support of their former colleagues. (Always assuming that you could find such a person who would want to be made up to a management role in the first place.)

And so does the current system - it's not unknown for managers to put a word in regarding a candidates suitability. And regardless of what the right and proper methods are that word can affect a candidates chances.

Totally agree that RM Managers should have the relevant training and experience Before they take up the job. To use the Forces analogy, no one would be promoted unless they'd attended the right courses, and passed. Not so much to do with age or experience but you certainly need the basic qualifications in place.

You could also gain that training and experience through serving for a long period of time, and gaining the Practical experience. Hence many Officers being "promoted from the ranks".

On the sexual discrimination angle, I've noticed a lot of Female Posties joining our ranks lately. Not sure what that indicates, perhaps these Mickey Mouse Part Time contracts are better suited to their work requirements...i.e dropping off/collecting kids etc, not needing 40hrs work but helping out with the bills. :hmmmm I wonder if the current batch of RM Managers think they might be "easier" to bully into working the way RM want? They do seem to be a nice bunch of easy going girls and some can get upset pretty easily by Managers acting the asshole, and messing them about. Unlike the Cynical, Thick Skinned, Miserable Old Gits that make up a large part of our work force! :Very Happy If the cap fits wear it.

because a manager needs to have a certain grasp of the day to day operation to manage
we have a manger in my office who was made up in a similar time scale
as it is that manager knows little of the operations regarding PHG,door,BRs,accounts, charges etc

I have said before
being a good postie doesnt make you a good manager, but you still need to know the job

It's irrelevant how long she was a manager or how good a manager she was.
None of that justifies the kind of comments directed at this employee by these morons.
What if a manager decided you were crap at your job?
Would it be acceptable to bully you? :cuppa
