In todays Courier, Richard Wiggins, head of fleet & asset technical services responded to the unbelievable heat that builds up in a locked van in the summer.
He said that an open window would solve the problem much quicker than air conditioning. I would like to invite him to go out with some of these new park & loop van deliveries,
where it is quite common to get out for about 20 min at a time. You start off in a reasonable way until you stop at a door in the blazing sunshine. The sweat drips off of you whilst you await the customer opening the door.
You carry on your loop and then get back into the red oven and the sweat pisses off of you again. By the time you have moved the van 800 yards or so, the open window has done feck all to cool you down and then you are out again for another 20 minutes. This carries on for your 4-5 hour delivery, constantly sweating your bollocks off because the van is so hot and you dont have enough time to cool down before you enter the van again.
This is definitely a H&S problem and should be dealt with immediately by the CWU. This cannot be good for the body, sweating one moment and then cooling off slightly whilst you walk for 20 minutes.
Air conditioning is needed, cycle deliveries instead of P&L or earlier starts before the hottest time of the day.

They will never introduce air-con in our vans because the extra fuel cost would be astronomical, it would probably cost them more for the vans and RM really don't give a s**t how hot the posties get. But remember if you don't put that window up right and the IB are out and about you get f**ked over. Another way to get the numbers down.
