dismissal for aod
we were called into the middle of the floor today for a wtll 'huddle'. the dom started on about h&s and said to be extra careful, apparently a driver was killed yesterday. he was a rural driver and was trying to empty a small mounted box from his van through the window without leaving his van, he subsequently lost control of the van and was impaled on a spiked fence. obviously very sad, but understandably a very worrying practice.,,,,anyways, still on about h&s, he went on to say that there had been a couple of instances where posties have been careless by allowing their fingers to go through the letterbox when delivering mail, resulting in them being bitten by a dog on the other side of the door. he then stated that this was unacceptable and if it happened at our office, then the matter wouldnt rest with him, but it will be passed up to the dsm, who, as he put it, would be looking for dissmissal.!! we all started laughing from shock and disgust really, but he became really agitated at this and was absolutely adamant it WILL happen. christ!! i,ve heard it all now

Re: dismissal for aod
Some types of behaviour are so serious and so unacceptable, if proved, as to warrant dismissal without notice (summary dismissal) or pay in lieu of notice. It is not possible to construct a definitive list of what constitutes gross misconduct, and in any event all cases will be dealt with on their merits. However, the following examples show some types of behaviour which in certain circumstances could be judged to be gross misconduct.
Theft
Violence
Harassment and bullying
Abusive behaviour to customers
Wilful Delay of mail
Deliberate disregard of health, safety and security procedures or instructions
Unauthorised entry to computer records
Criminal acts against the Post Office or its employees
Interfering with a witness to a Bullying & Harassment procedure case
Could you make it stick for shoving your fingers through a letterbox?...no..but it's still worth keeping in mind.

OK, just tell him that you're going to bring back anything that can't go easily through a letterbox, or if they give you that stupid plastic thingy, use that to deliver (one letter at a time) and then get them to deal with the cut offs
They can't have it both ways, either people rush around, taking shortcuts and making mistakes or you cut duty times to allow for people to follow all H&S rules.

If you have been told not to do it.
If you have a dog warning for that address.
If your behaviour leads to the mail being delayed.......
Gross misconduct?
Wilful delay?

why would you shove your fingers through a door that you knew had a dog warnig card for it. blatant stupidity comes to mind, in which case you would deserve all you get.clashcityrocker wrote:I think you could.fishtank wrote:

Deliberate disregard of health and safety has to come with it a reasonable assumption that the act was deliberate.
It is reserved for things like handbrake turns in the yard, racing yorks along the loading bay, seeing how many trays you can stack up before they fall over, driving with your feet on the steering wheel...that sort of bollocks.
It would be difficult to make a reasonable assumption that someone sticking their fingers in a letterbox was a deliberate act rather than just a blatantly stupid act.

Re: dismissal for aod
I dont think anyone sticks their whole hand through the boxes, but we all get thoroughly pissed off when you have one letter and the bloody brushes on the box wont budge, so you use a bit more force with your fingers to force it through. This can be an automatic reaction and when your mind is off in some sunny climate somewhere else it is easy to shove the odd finger through the box without thinking. Done it myself last year and got bit. I think the dog just go for the paper, but if you have a finger still halfway round it, then the dog isn,t bothered. He will take the whole lot. No warnings on the door or on the frame. Manager called round to see them and they now have the warnings on the door, but the dog is still allowed to get to the letterbox. Seems stupid to me, why do they want their post shredded.

A lot of the time when you have one very flimsy leaflet, and the letterbox has one of them draft excluder's, theres no option, what should we do then just throw it on the doorstep, and when the customer rings and complains pass it to the manager to sort out.

That's why you are supposed to be issued with a bit of plastic to push it through.alhothi wrote:A lot of the time when you have one very flimsy leaflet, and the letterbox has one of them draft excluder's, theres no option, what should we do then just throw it on the doorstep, and when the customer rings and complains pass it to the manager to sort out.

If anyone would know then it should be our resident news hound Teebs (you'd think it would make a news story somewhere) or brothermagrew who usually has his finger on the pulse about these types of things.daveyeff wrote:that aside has anyone heard anything about the poor bloke who was impaled on the fence. high price to pay for being in a hurry or trying to get finished quick. bloody hell.

Unless there were witnesses at the time how does anybody know the true cause of accident or even indeed whether such an incident occurred ,for a manager to conflate two such issues seems grotesque
