Been put on a rural I've not done for 2 years!!!

Next week I'm rota'd to do a duty I've not done for the best part of 2 years, when I last did it I had just had a hernia and the 'in and out' of the van really made my side ache, I do other van duties but this one is a 140 - 180 stop and out rural as opposed to the 12 - 24 stop and out rurals I find no problems with.

So what should I do? I'm apprehensive this will aggrevate the old injury again so I'm negative about doing it before I try it, however, my doctor did write me a fit note explaining I shouldn't be doing rural work with more than 24 stop and outs.

Do I dig my heels in and refuse, say I'll give it a go but if I injure myself it's on you or what?????????????????

I would certainly raise that concern with your manager and if necessary with your doc and rep

Have you ever had a hernia ebbzie, the injury never heals properly, I get aches all the time with 'overuse' and an in and out many time rural is definitely 'overuse'

If you have the fit note and they have a copy I would speak to the manager, with rep present if possible, and point out the stipulation. If the manager then sends you out on the rural and you are injured its on them, and with a witness they can't wiggle out of it. (Possible compensation ??)

It may be that, with their man management skills, that your manager has forgotten the stipulation you have, and if you remind him he may change his plans.

just tell them you cannot do it make sure someone is with you when you do then if owt happens to you if your made to do the job just do them for it

Sorry folks but reading this post confirms evrything whats wrong with certain people at royal mail tday.Now lets imagine you ran your own business and billy sicknote said to you,hi boss i cant do that duty what youve put me on tday because my leg hurts,do you a,take a hit in the pcket and put billy on a easier duty because its better for him and the rest of the staff will do that bit more or b,say to billy,time to get real son,either work your shift like everyone else has[had]to or go and get a BETTER job,realistic answers only please.

OK, so I've done the duty yesterday and today, they've given me a higher seated van and it seems to have done the job, no pain at all either day, the big test is tomorrow but I reckon I'll be fine.

And Humptys Gobby Shite or whatever your name is, find out all the facts before passing comment, I would wipe the floor with you on any town walk anywhere in the country, when I joined I explained to the DOM about my aches and pains and he took me on to do town walks only, he has since departed and I've been asked to help out this week on the duty in question, I know over 50 duties in my office...............how many do you know?

Yes you do or you face the consequences of ignoring a fit note which could be, but are not limited to:

a. If you can't comply with it then the employee should be sent home that's in the legislation regarding fit notes. HSE would investigate repeated cases for certain and might be interested in one offs if they build a picture of constant H&S failures.
b. Loosing a case for unfair dismissal when the employee has to pensioned off because you did not comply with the fit note.
c. Loosing a case for compensation when the employee suffers an injury/disability because you ignored the fit note.

Of course responsible employers should taken account of a fit note and take all reasonable steps to comply with it. If they can't then they should seek advice. Moving Billy onto an easier duty is cheaper in the long run, than paying for a short sided decision in the future.

Even without a fit note, which you seem to have ignored in your response, It would make good financial sense to take some work off Billy for a short time. Even in business its better to pay someone to do less work than normal, rather than pay them for sitting at home and not doing any work.

Hey Sexy Legs,come down off your cushioned drivers seat,regarding walks ive done tooooomany,but hey when i stated you got put on a different walk every week to learn the WHOLE town,not given an easy ride in the town centres.Oh by the way if i was your dom and you were grumbling about your aches and pains i would of gave you the walk near the local hospital,you would of been able to pop in every day when your finished and tell the doctors all your problems X

For the record Scrumpys I know every town walk in our office and the office that joined us 18 months ago, we are the second largest rural office in the country and I know a fair few of those too, I also work in the locker but I still come on here and listen to the likes of TrueBlue, Clash, Postman et al cos they've been there and done what I've done 10 fold and some, there's a moral there, advice costs nothing, I asked for help, not the unhelpful comments you decided to post after 20 odd posts, think about it
