Fixed term contract

I have just finished my first 3 month FTC and have just recieved a letter saying it will be extended until the end of october,when they expect the need for my services is likely to come to an end . How many months , years can they do this as it would be nice to have a permanent contract and not worry about them getting rid of me.

I was on one like this (6 months then 3 months each time) for nearly 3 years and got a letter like this every time my contract was up for renewal. Yet they renewed it every time. Then after about 15 months, I never even got the letters or new contracts to sign anymore! The union just sorted it recently that anyone who has done 2 years on short term contracts would be offered a permanent contract. And that is what happened with me. I don't what the situation now is for anyone on under 2 years. As I understand it, they can do it for up to 4 years by law.

The 2 year thing was only for certain starters form a certain date,they are still talking about it ...
