refusing to drive a van

Just wondering what would happen to someone who refused to complete an afternoon collection because the van provided was not, in their opinion, roadworthy?

I think if the van isn't roadworthy and there's an accident or a inspection then the driver gets done.

Nothing should happen, they should either provide you with another van or go out and do a vehicle check with you and if they consider it roadworthy get them to sign off a disclaimer to that effect :)

this is one of the very few times managers CANNOT overrule the driver.
as the driver you are the ONLY person who decides if a van is roadworthy until it is seen by a royal mail mechanic.
if management threaten you over this then ask them to put it in writing and if they are dumb enough to do this take them all the way down the bullying/grievance route.so for the benefit of the hard of thinking i will spell it out:-

THE DRIVER IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN DECIDE BECAUSE THE DRIVER IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO WILL BE PROSECUTED IF ANYTHING BAD HAPPENS.

Manager’s responsibility
It is the manager’s responsibility to ensure that;
All users have received training prior to use and a training record is filed locally
All walks on which the HCT are to be used have been walk risk assessed and assessed as suitable for HCT use before deployment (refer to WRAP via the MOVE intranet page)
Before use checks are carried out by each member of staff before any HCT’s are used
A process is in place to check that loads carried by HCT’s do not exceed the limits stated – Safety Management Standard 2.A2 describes the requirement for weighing of walks on a periodic sample basis
A process is in place to report and manage defective HCT’s including removal from use until rectified and fixing a visible flag identifying the equipment as faulty

Users’ responsibilities
All users are responsible for the following;
Using correct lifting and handling methods when loading, unloading or using the HCT
Informing the manager of any medical condition or individual capability which may affect their ability to safely use the HCT – inc pregnancy
Carrying out the “before use” checks listed below prior to every use
Reporting any defective or damaged HCT to the manager
Not misusing or modifying the HCT
Not using a damaged HCT
