accused of dumping mail in dustbins

I was told an official complaint was made against me of a postman who was seen dumping mail in dustbins on the walk i was doing. I was flabbergasted and told the manager it was elastic bands i was putting in the bins! Surely some people can tell the difference between an envelope and elastic bands? Couldn't they have checked the dustbins after i had gone to see if any letters were left in them? And finally if i was going to do something illegal, would i do it in someone's front garden to be freely seen by others?

I wont throw elastic bands in customers dustbins or roadside bins anymore. Take them back in the mail bag and empty them in the bins at the office. So would it be advised not to use bins on a walk in view of this problem? The postie will be easy target for complaint

I put all rubber bands back in my bag, including snapped ones. Next morning, when I'm ready to bundle up, I take them out of my bag and use them again. Any snapped ones go in the bin by my frame. Why would anyone not do this?

I would never, ever touch a customers bin. For one thing they are disgusting and there's nowhere to wash my hands afterwards, and secondly, most places round here have two or more wheely bins. I wouldn't know which is the recycle bin and which is the general bin.

If its a public bin on a lamppost say, then surely you can put rubbish in without feeling guilty? Anyone except nebby cows and maybe the 'Nawty Postman' video creator would just assume you were putting rubbish in the bin.

..Because after one use they start snapping, cracking into your fingers, stomach and anywhere else the useless f*cking things feel like twanging into.
