Will we see loads of delivery offices abolished?

After all, surely it will be easier to have, for example two or three delivery offices for a whole county with everyone driving out to their deliveries. Think of the time and money that will be saved on sorting, distribution and the impact on QoS with local missorts virtually being eradicated.

Definitely. There is going to be a move towards the out of town huge hub that the likes of TNT or DHL have. At the moment RM have loads of antiquated DO's taking huge amounts of money just to maintain. A lot are also in prime locations and a huge percentage of these are just not fit for purpose.

If you can attach the DO's from a whole load of towns to the mail centres then you eliminate a whole load of distribution costs.

Am I thinking incorrectly here. Several large vans to service the existing DOs. Hundreds of P&L vans getting to the central hub and then back out on to the walks. Where are the savings?

Well working in a SPDO I guess we will be 1 of the first targeted to move - only trouble is our subpostmaster who runs the adjacent post office has already said that if we go he loses his subsidy of about £2,500 per postie and therefore will have to close the post office.Yet another popular decision made by royal mail!!!

The deeper you look into it, operating costs could be cut dramatically across the board, P&L being the catalyst for the big changes. Mail centre re-deployment to throw mail off direct from css machines, tie up and bag up with staggered bag collections. Opens up a world of possible change.

Out of town hub is no good for those wanting to pick up packets we've 739'd. Potential for getting caught in traffic on the way to the loops is a worry too (for RM, gettting paid to sit in a jam on the Felling bypass as a non driver is all gravy to me).

You don't need to take the packets back.
Local pick-up points,sub-PO if it's still open,Spar,WH Smiths whatever.
We already have park&loop that travel 10+ miles to their first delivery point.

I can't see how you'll make any savings doing that. For a start you would have too add a load of dead traveling time to each duty therefore cutting down the delivery span. So that in turn means you've got to add more duties (and vans ) to cover that shortfall.

My office is 25 miles from the hub and we've got 40 rural duties probably doing approx 1500 miles a day. Add 50 miles travelling to the hub to each duty takes that daily total up to 3500 miles a day.

None starter for me.

There are savings where it is viable to merge,where there isn't...there isn't.
There are D.O.s as little as 5 miles apart where it makes sense to merge but i can't see people moving 25 miles.
Everybody looks at there own picture and thinks if it doesn't fit here it's a non-starter but there ore 1600 different units out there.
