Gribben sounds good front line H and S rep in a PF depo. If I was a PF worker the last thing I would want is to see nobody from PF on the PEC.

Did you notice though that he's not actually EVER been an IR Representative. I take you point Daz but the Union has a specialist Health and Safety department which is designed to pick up those issues.

But he brings recent/current experience of working on the front-line in a PF office how many candidates can bring that to the table? When the national officer (TP?) brings proposals to the PEC he could prove a very useful voice in helping his fellow PEC mbrs judge the proposal. He may well have to hit the ground running but based on his other union work I would say he has the raw capacity to do just that and over the next two years shape up to be a really good asset for the PEC and PF CWU mbrs. Whose to say that in two years time we dont look back and say wow Im really glad we gave him the benefit of the doubt?

Im prepared to give him a chance and that he can learn from the old hands.

I suppose whilst making the point from the angle of he has never been an IR rep what I really was trying to say was - How many disputes has he led?, what has he achieved in his own Branch?, what is his record on individual representation? What are his visions for the future of the Union? During his time as a Youth Rep how many young members has he recruited? It is a pity a 300 word address doesn't really draw out these type of issues.

The real question for me at the moment is how are we going to change this in order to get the best 13 representatives in the UK onto the PEC?

You need to first draw out the best candidates and while the NEC/PEC gives the impression of being a closed shop you never will.
The union has to give it's membership and representatives a real feeling that it wants to change,open up and modernise...at the moment that's the last feeling you get.
