why don't they stop free re-directions?
when you get a letter and the new owners have written the old owners new address on it and have sent it back through the system- its basicaly a free re-directoni isnt it? if people want their mail re directed they shouldnt they pay for it like everyone else? isnt the compony loosing money this way?
are you allowed to just kill them off?

I think it is part of the USO that unopened redirected letters are redirected as and when they are recieved.veryn wrote:when you get a letter and the new owners have written the old owners new address on it and have sent it back through the system- its basicaly a free re-directoni isnt it? if people want their mail re directed they shouldnt they pay for it like everyone else? isnt the compony loosing money this way?

Re: why don't they stop free re-directions?
Have to sort of agree with you.... it doesn't fit into the new paradigm. I had an address that was re-directing 5 or 6 letters everyday. When I mentioned it to them they said why pay for a redirecting when this (what they were doing) was free. Mentioned the amount of mail being directed and my lino he said kill it.... a few days later got a paid for re-direction for that address. The other problem I have is are DSA "partners" paying anything towards the re-direction costs?veryn wrote:when you get a letter and the new owners have written the old owners new address on it and have sent it back through the system- its basicaly a free re-directoni isnt it? if people want their mail re directed they shouldnt they pay for it like everyone else? isnt the compony loosing money this way?

BTW re-directions can't be b2b... those you CAN kill as I seem to do every morning

Re: why don't they stop free re-directions?
Well my Office is now treating unofficial re-directions as unpaid, and surcharging them.veryn wrote:when you get a letter and the new owners have written the old owners new address on it and have sent it back through the system- its basically a free re-direction isn't it? if people want their mail re directed they should they pay for it like everyone else? isn't the company loosing money this way?

I like them.
It keeps the volumes up.
If RM are worried about revenue they should charge the DSA leeches for handling their R.T.S. bollox.

I used to deliver to a lot of Army Quarters. The cheeky buggers used to print off a load of stickers, for their new address, and ask the new occupants to stick them on any mail that came!
We used to have some stickers stating it was recommended to use Official Re-directions to avoid Fraud. I used to stick them all over them and that sometimes persuaded them pay up!

This has bothered me for years
On the one hand we have to surcharge some poor granny for a letter thats slightly thick or oversized and we are letting people use the service for free.

I believe the contract that they have with Royal Mail, for delivering their DSA, already includes redirections and RTS feesStormproof wrote:fishtank wrote: If RM are worried about revenue they should charge the DSA leeches for handling their R.T.S. bollox.![]()

Since we managed to negotiate a contract to deliver their stuff at a loss,i would imagine we probably pay them for the privilege of doing their RTS as well.

RTS i think is a standard thing.. but delivering something to an address other than the original printed/hand written adress is a free redirection that we used to get b*llocked about if caught...since unless its paid.. it shouldnt happen
i dare say that more than 50% of all "gone away".. "moved to..." mail is DSA items...
so i was told just label it as gone away and stick it in the RTS frame unless there is a valid RM redirection in place...
straight forward... the sender has paid for the item to be delivered to the address printed/written on the envelope... not to another address if the addressee has decided not to set up a redirect, or inform the sender of their new location

Thank you for your letter dated 19th July 2007 asking for clarity around the application of Vague Address Labels and Unofficial Redirection Labels.
I have consulted with the Marketing leads and can advise as follows:
Where an item of mail is received at a forwarding delivery unit bearing an Unofficial Redirection, Royal Mail as part of the Undeliverable & Reposting specification is obliged to deliver the item to the redirected addressee
without any further remuneration. To facilitate a reduction in Unofficial Redirections & reduce the potential impact
of Identify Fraud, Royal Mail employees will endeavour to apply an Unofficial Redirection Label to each item ahead of delivery.
It will be generally recognised that as customers switch to the Official Redirection service provided by Royal Mail there will be a reduction in the need to apply these labels as units will then simply follow due protocols for the
delivery of Official Redirections. The same application principles will apply for the Vague Address Label and over time would expect to see a reduction in use as we educate our customers in the proper mails addressing
standards. If you need any further information please let me know.
Yours sincerely
Andy E Hughes

Re: why don't they stop free re-directions?
Found the rules..
6. FORWARDING A LETTER
6.1 A recipient of a Letter (except a Business Reply, Freepost, Special Delivery or Recorded Letter) may forward it from its original address to another address in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man by writing or printing the new address on the Cover or envelope of the Letter and re-posting the Letter. A Letter may only be forwarded in this way to the original Addressee.
6.2 Except in the circumstances set out in section 6.3 below, Royal Mail will not charge additional postage or fees for forwarding a Letter that has been re-posted in accordance with section 6.1 above.
6.3 Royal Mail will charge additional postage and any applicable fee for forwarding a Letter if it has been opened before being re-posted, or the name of the original Addressee is covered or obscured, or it is forwarded by a Business or a person acting on behalf of a Business. Royal Mail may charge an additional fee to be fixed by Royal Mail from time to time, to forward a Letter.
6.4 Royal Mail may at its discretion deliver to the Addressee or return to the Sender a Letter which has been forwarded and which bears a Special Delivery or Recorded label. In either case Royal Mail will charge the Addressee or Sender additional postage and/or a fee to be fixed by Royal Mail from time to time.
6.5 In any case where Royal Mail considers that a Letter has been forwarded to evade payment of postage it may treat it as an unpaid Letter in accordance with section 17 of this Scheme.
6.6 Royal Mail can be required under the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and the Social Security Administration (Northern Ireland) Act 1992 (“the Acts”) not to deliver items of Social Security Post which have been forwarded or redirected to a new address, but to return them to the Sender. Royal Mail is required under the Acts to provide information about the redirection of Social Security Post to persons specified in the Acts.
