Union Democracy in action

Post by Tamsky »

The CWU is having it's own General Election. Every member has an equal vote in deciding how our Union is run and ballot papers are out now.

As a postal member I have a vote for the National Executive Council which oversees the whole Union. It comprises all sections of the Union - Telecoms, Capita, O2, Royal Mail Group etc. Outside of our national Conference it is the Parliament of our Union. I have voted for T Bouch - Plymouth, P Browne - Newcastle, K Dudd - Bristol, M Kavanagh - South Midlands, P Keenlyside - Manchester, J Malone - Scotland, L McLean - Romford, K Quirke - South East Wales, D Robertson - Glasgow.

The Postal Executive concerns all matters within Royal Mail Group employees and I have voted for M Ali - Birmingham, T Bouch - Plymouth, P Browne - Newcastle, K Dudd - Bristol, S Gribben - Northern Ireland West, M Kavanagh - South Midlands, P Keenlyside - Manchester, J Malone - Scotland, L McLean - Romford, K Quirke - Soth East Wales, D Robertson - Glasgow.

If elected these members will be released from duty for the period of office while maintaining their pay grade, they will be supported financially by the Union for extended periods in London. Those unelected will return to duty. The Executives will hold National Officers to account in implementing policies decided by the Union at our conference.

In casting my vote I have supported those with a proven track record of service to the membership and have supported younger members for election. Two things are missing from the meetings I attend - Women reps and young folk, I hope my vote will help correct this.

It is democracy in action.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

No they will be brought before a parliamentary select committee to find out why they lost their jobs, leaving the government in the lurch now that they no longer have sucking up buddies.

Phil Browne was the only person to get a majority of those who actually voted in the last election

Only if they are RML delivery function.

PEC encompass CWU mbrs across RM GROUP

I'm looking for the best PEC candidates from POL PF Processing and distribution as well as Delivery.

For NEC I'm not interested in which part of RM Group they come from.

Looks more like some people are more interested in where people come from than ability to do the job. When the hell are we going to get away from geography and start looking at talent? Looking at some people's votin lists it appears to be more to do with where the person lives - what nonesense is that? I tell you what I don't believe anything will change when this is the way we do our business.

Start looking at talent?
And what does the ordinary member use to judge talent...a 300 word "big up myself"..or Cheryl Cole? :cuppa

Clearly ordinary members will not be able t make such judgements. Lists are drawn up by people that have access to ALL PEC members and in general the members that vote will be guided by those recommendations. There is no need for any of this to be geographical.

If that's the case why not move to branch block voting and do away with the membership altogether,it would save a fortune on ballot papers.
I am not a fan of making a decision based purely on geography but neither am i interested in somebody else's idea of talent.
Let's open the whole thing up,allow members to see exactly what existing PEC/NEC members have contributed ,how they have voted on major issues and what prospective members aim to contribute...and we can let the membership decide where the talent lies.

I've been a member of the CWU for about 10 years and this is the first time that the role of the Executives has been clearly explained to me. Tamsky's explanation is not included in the booklet that was sent to us because it is not actual Union policy. The Rule Book states a more watered down role, "Each Industrial Executive shall be responsible for implementing Industrial Conference decisions".

How easy is it for ordinary members to judge whether the Postal Executive has been holding National Officers to account?

We should all get a booklet after each year's conference detailing the motions that have been passed and failed and the voting records of PEC members.

How easy is it for ordinary members to hold the Postal Executive to account?

I see the same ugly faces every year. Are there really only 18 activists in the whole of Royal Mail Group that are competent enough to sit on the Postal and National Executives?

Well in favour of opening things up Fishtank but not sure we'll ever truely get members interested enough to vote in big numbers. My experience is members in the main are only interested in how the union can help them at local level. I don't think we could go to block votes even though there is good arguement for it. I am all for members making their own decisions but for most it is on recommendation from those they trust. Also while i'd like to know which way people vote it is perhaps more important to know the reasons why!
