Break Time RULES

Anyone shed any light on the actual rules for taking your break our DIM insists that
you have to take 20 mins before you go out, I must add he is a master at making
rules up as he goes along. DIM also reckons you have to take the 20 mins in the building
you cant go out and take the 20 mins at a mates or even your own house as he obviously
does not trust us at all. If that is true the remainder of your break do you have to travel
back in to have the rest of your break..which would be a 30 mile trip for myself or do
the rules change yet again ??

Rest breaks - a break during your working day
As an adult worker (over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work more than six hours at a stretch.
A lunch or coffee break can count as your rest break. Additional breaks might be given by your contract of employment. There is no statutory right to 'smoking breaks'.
The requirements are:
• the break must be in one block
• it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle
• you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work
• your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions

same eveywere bud but thats how it should be done if you all stick to it at the same time the soon get pissed off say all go up at 9.00 for 20 mins they hate it cose no one to do the missorts and finish preps

It's good to see a manager and rep both ensuring that members take at least part of their break.

I only read up on the 20 min thing myself today. Our DIM is telling us to take 20 mins before going out and the other 20 makes up the last 20 of our duty time. Didn't know they could do this but it seems they can (between 7h1min - 8h59min 1x40 break or 2x20 break).

He did try and force us to take our full 40 at the start of shift the other week as the mail was late in and we had nothing to do for over an hour. Cheeky fecker

It's odd. It is like the people that get in 20-40 minutes early, only to find themselves all tied up and ready to go but having to wait for missorts before they're allowed out. Whereas I get in at my start time, take 20 minutes break for breakfast and I'm still more often than not ready to go when they're allowed out. I'll take the extra time in bed thanks. We get up early enough as it is. And as has been said before, how many employers still pay you for breaks? Everyone should at least take 20 minutes.

We use to be a 20+20 office but since the revision came in we take the full 40 mins and everyone seems a lot more chilled. No one works through their breaks.

Then you get an instruction "Meal breaks must be taken at correct times and away from the work station" even when 'away from the work station' can only mean in the yard outside. - you couldn't make it up.

Same in our office. I enjoy my break and go out feeling refreshed.

Lino wanted us to take 20 mins in canteen then 20 mins out on the road, but our whole section stood firm and we all take 40 mins.

Isn't this down to what revisions you have had over the years for christs sake?
Screws can't just say i'm splitting your break or whatever and likewise the same for the staff,it's down to the office plan that you've got when you had your revisions,either SDD,P&M 2010...

i dont see why you would want your break after working 2 hours indoors which is not hard work then have another 6 hours out walking around?

Question here for you people. would appreciate some opinions...... (dont post much, but always reading and keeping up to date with you lot)

our office this week has changed the start and finish times of some of the reserve 30hr staff....

instead of throwing their walk off and then taking it out, there now making them come in later, the walk will be prepped, they then take it out and then when they get back, they have to take another row out from a different walk.... which takes them up to their time...

old times 8.20 - 2.30 - break at 9.45 - 10.05.

new times 9.30 - 3.20 - break at 3.00 - 3.20.

for this to be possible, the manager said there to take the break at the end, which keeps them at "last delivery letter before 3pm.

now my question is...... are we allowed to take our break at the end????... i thought it had to be in the middle???.

has the manager just made this rule up to suit them (break at end) or is this allowed?. if not, have they got a case and should they get the union involved?
