Have noticed alot of new recruits coming onto the forums, asking what to expect, what to bring, etc.

With all the reduncies looming [voluntary or otherwise] why are RM still recruiting and for that matter recruiting heavily?

Surely they should wait to see who's taking EVR, buying down hours?

And more importantly...why are the union allowing them to fill every vacancy with a part-time,fixed-term contract?
Is this the actions of an employer committed to a predominantly full-time substantive workforce?
We fell for this crap after P&M2007 when they were allowed to flood the place with P/T staff and now it's happening again.

Thats an easy one they replacing full timers with part timers which is perfectly legal even with forced redundancies

Because
1. RM only have to pay you 20 hours when you're on leave or sick.
2. They can give you as much or little OT as they need.
3. You do the same work as the FT guys but only get paid for the hours that you do. Today being a good example. I start at 0600 same as the FT chaps, we're prepped, walked and done by 1245. They get paid an 8 hour day and I get 6.45. Simple maths. Fill an office with PT workers and they should save on the wages budget.

It's a Win Win situation for RM.They know the job can't be done in that time..but until you've worked 40 hours they're only paying you the standard hourly rate. You only get paid for the hours you actually work..No Job and Finish ( getting 2 hours pay for sitting at home with your feet up ) so if it's light and you come back 2 hours early ..They save 2 hours wages!

Most PTers want the extra hours so there's no problem with you cutting off. If you're on Holiday, or Sick, they only pay you your 20 hours. Plus they're saving on their Pension Contributions because you're not working as many hours as a FTer. Admittedly the more hours you work the more they take off you, but I'm not sure if they have to pay any more? Probably not!

Can't see any drawbacks for RM. It's an Immoral, Cynical and Divisive system that should be jumped on by a Strong Union but that's just wishful thinking!

I don't think it's just RM doing this now. The large supermarkets seem to be recruiting mainly PT workers. And looking at today's news it looks like we'll be getting a part time Army soon.

You get what you pay for, and it's a sad day when the defence of our realm is funded on a pro-rata basis. Sod's law that there'll be a decent-sized war in the next decade for us to send our one day a week, one weekend a month armed forces to fight.

The business is going through a bad time at the mo which you may of picked up on.
A lot depends on where your office is with regards to revisions,have a word with your guys and the rep who should make things a bit more clearer.

The 20 hrs might be over 3 days and not 4hrs/day.
