New Rep = Absorption issues

Post by superteamu10 »

We haven't had a rep at our place for years now so I stuck my hand up recently as I had taken out a grievance against the DOM and was just fed up the way we were getting treated.

Most of the time if I am stuck I look ion here for info as I haven't done any courses yet, although I have got some knowledge of things and common sense I like to think.

Anyway the DOM says her figures reckon we can save 90 hours a week and she wants us to absorb for apparently the next 5 weeks, although I have heard that one before.
Apart from telling everyone the obvious, like don't come in early etc, I am not sure what I can do if the DOM starts insisting people go out in vans before their duty to do the absorption and alter break times.

I would be happy to say just do as the DOM says and then tell them you can't complete their own duty if you feel you can't, but is it our right to do it after the duty if we want?

first off im not a rep.
but this is my understanding . absorbtion is part of "summer savings"
which was agreed to in principle by the union.except that absorption is meant to utilize spare capacity
ie if people are finishing before time.
if you have time to do it do it!
nobody should do absorption first and then find their into "overtime" on their duty.
it stops being absorption if the spare capacity is not there to be absorbed.
i said to my my dom i may do it if im back in time.
dom says what if your not back in time ?
i say then theres the proof of no spare capacity!
way i see it is this.. i could be flagged up as failing at my job if regularly cutting off
but let them try to discipline someone for not doing something over and above his duty and outside his time.
doms are trying to con people into taking it out with them.. this is in a sense you agreeing to deliver it
once it its left the office its not the doms responsibility anymore!... :speak to the hand .
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....

where i work there are different dly sections under different managers. the section which doe's the job properly, ie no early starts take m/rs ect, don't absorb, the others who rush around like maniacs do. end of story really.

Doing the job properly is not a way to avoid lapsing.
Whether an office lapses or not depends on the available man/hours on any given day and the traffic volume.
If your DOM says you have this spare capacity they should be able to explain why. They should be able to show you the traffic, the breakdown of the traffic into letters, flats and packets, how much time is needed to complete the IPS and prep for p/t staff, who is available to do it and where the spare capacity is.
Even if everybody starts on time, takes their full meal relief and stops using their car - if the manpower avaialble is over and above that needed to complete the work, then there are opportunities to lapse.

You need to ensure everyone on the IPS is capable of working to a reasonable standard.
You need to ensure everyone who is double/triple prepping knows the frames well enough to prep them to a reasonable standard.
Do some walks require extra time due to lots of redirection s or dead letters?
Do people weigh their bags in line with the pouch weight matrix?
Do you have a duty to clear down the drop bags before they become overweight?
Anything you can think of to put extra time into the indoor operation takes time out of the outdoor operation (the lapsing)
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Phase2 is summer savings/local flexibility agreement, if you haven't a agreement for your D.O or its no good then negotiate for that.

Phase3 is all year round and is for absence and workload that has declined. In these situations efficiency is desired to be increased. Outdoor absorption is legit but NOT compulsory.

if its reasonable request tell them to do it work there hours then go home but ask the dom what they want to do if they carnt complete is it overtime or cutoff

thats all you can do
