Today a colleague of mine was stopped by police on his delivery for having bald tyres. They gave him three points and the van has to be brought to the station on Monday. Of course no managers about on a Saturday afternoon to deal with this. Will he be in deep s**t?

As stated,it is the driver's responsibility to check the vehicle so you will cop the lot (no pun intended) if you get caught,it is the same if you get caught speeding as one of our guys did yesterday.

It wasn't me but I must confess I'm not fully up on vehicle checks - I was never shown just thrown in at the deep end. I'd rather know now to keep myself right but don't want to go to a manager now because they will probably flip that I left it so long...

Surely whoever drives the van should ensure they are not driving with bald tyres.
How bad were they?
If the police were being pedantic and the tyres were the wrong side of borderline, nothing should happen.
If they were bald, someone should have noticed before now. Isn't the DOM supposed to check all the vehicles on a weekly basis?

no you should not be sacked over this.have you not had your driving assessment if not you might get away with it all together have a word with your rep he might be able to sort this out for you

I thought all drivers had to do a "take over" check - I would anyway - as its my licence on the line, I wouldn't trust that by best mate had done the checks.

The depth of the s**t may be directly related to the depth of the tread.
If these tyres were "bald" then it's going to be difficult to argue that it was a genuine oversight.
If they were slightly below the legal minimum it might sit better.
it is unlikely he will be facing dismissal but you never know with this lot.
Deliberate disregard of H&S can be viewed as gross misconduct but you would have to make a case for "deliberate".

we were told who ever takes out the van first does a full check but the next driver only does a visual check

Didn't we have this discussion ages ago with some people point blankly refusing to do checks? Just goes to show,10 mins of rm time, saves you serious grief.

by signing for this vehicle you are legally responsible for it, lucky it was only the old bill and not VOSA

The vehicle checks are the same as the ones you should use on your car before you drive it, tyres, lights, glass and general condition of the bodywork (no bits sticking out) and then the fluids, oil, water brake fluid, coolant (but most of those are in sealed units that we're not to touch but are reportable on the PMT1 form).

I've refused to drive vans with baldy tyres but now I think there's someone to phone who'll come out and change them for you, should be a number inside your van (on the windscreen probably).
