as it look like we are going to be privatised now what do you think we should be doing as a union ? should we try to embrace the change and move forward because i think that there wont be as many of us left in the job. so will there even be a union.

Whilst the bill has passed through the House Of commons etc. This is not the end of the debate. For anyone to remotely intrested in buying Royal Mail the pension issue needs to be resolved and that is the splitting of the pension fund and the creation of the new fund. In addition Royal Mail are desperate for European State funding and that is their number one goal at the moment. On top of that the issue of regulation needs to be sorted out.

Moya Greene and other people in the know believe that the earliest Royal Mail will be in a postion to be sold for a good price rather than on the cheap is late 2012.

However one of the amendments states that who ever wants to buy Royal Mail will have to be agreed by the House of commons at a vote.

Now in terms of the union surviving , well BT is privitised , as is British Airways , as is London Underground , as is most of the transport system yet the RMT and Unite and other unions as well as the CWU survie. Why because at the end of the day , most members recognise that the union and a collective voice is the only way that they can influence decisions.

a collective doesn,t just agree deals for london and to damn with the rest of the country so really dont care if the union get blown away with privatisation

Hans so when has the union only agreed deals for London ? There has been plenty of disputes in Glasgow and Edinbugh over the years where similar joint statements have been reached at national level. Never noticed anyone complaining that the union only did deals for Scotland then.

Whenever there is a dispute there is a joint statement and if there has been national intrevention then it would normally be called a nationally joint statement.
