I have been given a Stage 1 warning due to having time off sick. I was off for two weeks in hospital having a major operation. I will be having a further 2 operations within the next 12 months, meaning several more weeks off work which will inevitably mean a 2nd and 3rd stage warning. Am I to believe when you're on a Stage 3 warning there is a chance you could be disciplined or even get the sack? I haven't had any time off in 3 years. I am thinking of appealing against my warning but would like some advice? A mate of mine appealed against his warning but had to travel to another location, so he didn't go out on delivery that day. He won the appeal.
I argued against my case during my back to work interview but was told, "Those are the rules, it's the same for everybody, even managers".
On a similar note, a friend of mine took a week off sick due a death in the family and was given a stage 1 warning! I think it's disgraceful management. The poor guy has had enough to go through without a stage warning hanging over his head. I guess we are just a number.

there is no appeal process until you get to stage 3.
try to stay on the sick without returning so often, a stage cannot be issued whilst on he sick.

you must be very ill to have these operations like ive said before your health is much more important than royal mail,your just a number never forget this.I must say that if your manager does try and give you a satge 3 warning possible sack, then he must be a bit of a git!Did you kwow that stage warnings are total up to the mangers they dont have to give issue them to you if they feel its not called for, from waht you have said i dont think its called for and you should be ok if you are a decent worker because if your not its a good excuse to get rid of you.Get the union on your side sometimes they are good.

Disgusting :( once again discretion should be used but to be fair nowadays in this job there is sure to be a lot of sick - then warnings - then out the door and presto - new younger recruits that know no different and more savings again !!! Makes you wonder don't it !

Thanks for the replies. My manager changes with the weather. One minute he can be on my back just looking for an excuse to get me in the office and other times he can be
helpful and understanding. He has covered my back a few times when I have forgotten missorts and even specials. This happened more while I was going through depression and my mind wasn't in the job. But I haven't been on a warning in 3 years. I am a good worker and I do the job well.
I am still ill now and I shouldn't really be in work but I am fit enough to be on my feet again and would rather be outdoors than stuck in the house.
I didn't know it was the managers decision to give stage warnings. I mite bring that up next time and ask him why he feels I deserve to be given a warning when I have proven to be genuinely ill. He knows I am going back into hospital so maybe he is trying to get rid of me.

Just make sure you see someone in person. The jokers who do the phone consultations haven't got a clue. They ask the questions that appear on the screen, and blindly follow the advice the computer gives them. There have even been cases of ATOS assessing back, and other Muscularskeletal injuries without ever seeing the patient. 
How are they supposed to know from speaking to someone, how severe or mild the injury is?
For example: There was the case of someone who injured their back in an FLT AOD, who was given a phone consultation. ATOS provided a rehab plan, based on that consultation, and within a week he was back on the sick, with a worse injury than he'd had to start with! 
At least if you see a qualified Doctor, you know they have some idea of WTF they're talking about. And if they do mess up, you can complain to the BMA. But if it's a call centre worker, with a computer instead. The BMA have no jurisdiction over them.

If you are having operations, then the likelihood is that your sickness is likely to be covered by the DDA. It is "long term" when you have had the same symptoms for over twelve months.
Take a copy of your sick record, and speak to your doctor.
If it is covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (even if it is a temporary disablement) then they cannot legally sack you.
