transferring offices, can a manager prevent me?

Hello everyone. I phoned the office I wish to transfer to today because I know the manager there and I was told they are desperate for rural drivers like me and he would let me start tomorrow if my current manager would ok it. I went and spoke to my current manager about transferring as soon as possible for him to feed me a load of lies. He told me there we no jobs there and that they wouldnt be looking for anyone, when I said I had already spoke to the manager there though he changed his tune.

He said he wouldnt let me go till at least september possibly later, that there would be a different manager at the office I want to transfer to by then and that there wouldnt be a job there for me. Can he legally stop me from transffering when the other office is short staffed and the move will be much better off for me travel wise and financially?

I would say unless there is a job advertised in the office you want to go to then there will be no possibility of you moving!

They are advertised, 3 jobs at the moment with 2 more jobs becoming available in the next few weeks due to retirements. What annoys me is when i've asked for my own duty or rota in my current office i've always been told there is nothing there and he would help me transfer if I wanted to, the time has come when i've asked to be transferred and now he won't let me. The problem is im a lead reserve and know a lot of driving duties in the office so they don't want to lose me and have told me that before but the other office will be much better personally for me so I don't see how he can stop me.

Perhaps you do your job to well. Do it badly and he will be glad to get rid of you.

Basically Eagle he doesn't give a s**t about your problems or needs. From his point of view he will be losing a Driver and he'll be short of staff. That's probably all it boils down to.

I believe if you put in the Transfer Form he can only delay you so long, thinks it's about 90 days, but that doesn't seem to help you out with the new manager situation. Good luck I know it really can help out in a crap job if you can transfer. It'd save me £120 a month in Fuel! Can't see the problem myself but it is the Business' Point of View that wins!

Wouldn't bother me Lizard, I'd jump at the chance! Wouldn't bother me having a Red Van out front, once I realised the savings! There's enough Local Authority and Business vans parked up in my road. Bloody Nightmare trying to get down it on a Sunday when no-ones at work.

The reason your manager can stop you is if your office is under staffed. Then he woould need you for `opperational needs`. The other thing correct me if i`m wrong is you still have to put a transfer request in to hr in otherwise your manager can refuse so i would do it asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks pat, handed the form to my line manager yesterday. He can only keep me for 29 days according to the transfer form.
