Hi I have been offered a job as a postie.
It is a permanent contract but 8 hours a week (Saturdays).
Couple of questions i would like to know are :

1) How permanent a job is it. I have been offered a local driving job for 30 hours a week but would like the postman job as eventually i would like to work full time as a postman.

2) What are the chances of getting a full time post (30 hours +) a week eventually ?

3) What are the chances of picking up extra hours each week. I am willing to travel to other depos.

1) Permenant contract means just that, though you will be under probation I think for the first while (it'll say in your contract or someone will tell us)

2) Full time jobs don't come up anymore - not going to happen - though it may be possible if under revisions, you'd be offered a higher number of hours (say 25), but again, not guaranteed

3) overtime or extra hours, depends on how your particular delivery area is managed and staffed - though realistically, if you are up to speed and good at your job, you will be offered regular overtime, though again not guaranteed.

The driving job you've been offered - is it only temporary over weekdays? if so, could you not take that as your fulltime work, and the postie job for the weekend? I work two different jobs similar to this - so know it's possible. Being taxed is a pain though

The 8 hour contract will be covering someones day off its unlikely you would get more hours out of it even more so being a saturday job.We are getting similar contracts coming up in our place 20 hours sat+mon covering people who get every sat+mon off.

I'd go for the 30 hour driving job myself and maybe you could work both you never know.

you may get some additional overtime, and the good thing is you can drive, but only 8 hours will be guaranteed.
its overwhelming at first, but with anything, the more you do it, the better you get.
the other blokes will help you out, dont be afraid to ask.

8 hours being a postie a week or 30 hours doing a local job ? either you won the lottery or you want to be a r.m manager, as they dont add up either

I would take the 30hour job mate at least your guaranteed your wage then. Its extremely unlikely you will get a contract as good as that at RM these days and its not that great anyhows!

I agree take the 30 hours offered as the chances of coming up to 30 hrs from just 8 in RM are very slim.

Take the 30 hours job. Ask the boss if this includes saturday work if not, take both. It is depends on your finances, lifestyle, and need.

I wouldn't just take postman job and turn down the other job.
