The Union Is A Joke

Maybe I'm biased but my dad worked for Royal Mail for close to 30 years paying into the Union the whole time. He was dismissed just before Christmas, here's the story:

We have two offices under one roof and the Caller's Office in the afternoon had two people - I did one side, my dad did the other. It's a big office and needed two people, at least, for the amount of customers.

In April '09 RM did away with one duty saying one man could handle it (which is bollocks). My dad didn't want to go back on delivery so I was the one who lost his duty. My dad quickly regretted this as the workload was ridiculous for one man. Anyway, Christmas last year and it's nearly 20 mins over closing up time, my dad is by himself and the Caller's Office is still queued out the door with people still coming. He decides to inform the customers he's locking up, gets them to leave and locks the door. The next day he is suspended and a week later dismissed. He was never told he had to keep it open as long as their were customers.

Of course he appeals but the thing is a farce as the DOM basically spouts a load of s**t that the appeal board accept. So he decides to appeal through the union and they turn him down. This is a senior man who has paid his dues for close to thirty years. When I confronted my union rep about this he shrugged his shoulders, said he knew nothing about it and walked off. :vcfo

Sounds very harsh indeed to be sacked but I would have served the remaining customers so I can understand your manager taking action, the fact that the action was to sack him is like I said, very harsh, my advice is to appeal.

previous mistakes are not overlooked, royal mail is looking to cut manpower, and boost the workload.

I'm not surprised that the manager's sacked him, they're c***s to a man, but the fact the union won't represent him is ridiculous IMO.

Also as a side note, they have added a helper in the Caller's Office now as one of the afternoon collections, basically admitting it was too much work for one person.

Was there no manager in the office at the time of closure? Surely that would mean that this was enforced overtime. Which in itself was illegal? It certainly raises a lot of questions to be asked.

Disgusting - I've really noticed of late too that the business seems to want to drive senior people out (5yrsplus) and by doing so guess .... Yea no pay offs more money savings ! But I'm finding that be it union or your so called friends etc don't care anymore about anything other than themselves ! I'm alright jack attitude :( sad

You really need to phone the Union HQ and tell them what has happened and make sure you tell them about the current staffing of the callers office.

Royal Mail is a joke.
The CWU is a joke.
And both jokes are on us, the workers. On our backs to be precise. The postal workers burden, overpaid, underworked executives in the Royal Mail/CWU management gravy train.
