Hello first poster here i have been at royal mail for nearly four years im a part timer on a 25 hour contract

just a couple questions hopefully someone will be able to help me

firstly regarding d2d items are they part of the mail or not as none of the d2d are prepped into frames in our office in fact they are dumped on the floor and im expected to prep them for delivery after everyone else has started their duty

leading to the next question as we are all meant to finish our duties at the same time and they are meant to be the same length common sense dictates we should all start our duties at the same time

yet in my office anyone not on a 25 hour contract has tied up their frame collected their specials and are loading their vans when i walk in the door to start my shift

im expected to sort packets do redirections prep d2d tie up frame pouch bundles and packets and load the van so obviously in the time that it takes to do all this im then behind everyone else

correct me if im wrong but surley that is mistreatent and we should be allowed the same time to do the same jobs

i have complained to the union rep many times but he thinks its perfectly fair

i have complaned usualy ending with an arguement with the manager because generally i need overtime most days because of this (the overtime is always refused)

any temp managers agree with me that its wrong and pay the overtime but nothing gets done about it

i have got the point where i cant stand my job now and would leave in a heart beat if there was anything going but like most people the jobs arent there

im not the only one in my office but generally its the posties on 25 hours that are affected but many are on temp contract and wont speak out

anyway rant over and just to talk about it has made me feel better thanks for any help

You're expected to work your contracted hours.
Is it fair that others aren't?...No.
Is it mistreatment?....No.
The fact that you are being "refused" overtime payments is a different matter and if the overtime is pre-agreed you should raise a grievance but that has nothing to do with what anyone else is doing.

Five hours a day, nothing more, nothing less, unless you are prepared to work over, then you book it. If you do not get paid overtime on days when mail is heavy, then work to your contract. Your Dim will soon change his mind about overtime.

the overtime is never pre agreed when anyone else does my shift they start at 0733 and i start at 0835 but i have to do the same work as them the boss arguement is that they dont ask for overtime my arguement that they are being given more time to do the same task this is dismissed out of hand

according to my boss i should be able to prep 360 d2d items in 4 minutes like everyone else something i have never witnessed anyone else at my work achieve granted mostly because their d2d items are prpeed before i have even started my shift

surely being expected to do the same job in less time is unreasonable

Never ever work over without agreeing it first.
A manager will argue that he could have covered it at no cost to the business.

All of the above is typical management nonsense.
You have to call him on it and get your rep involved.
Ask to see where he gets the 360 D2D's in 4 minutes...
If you start an hour later,give him an hours work back and if he moans tell him to put his concerns in writing and hand them to your rep...it should be good for a laugh if nothing else.

You have to stop seeing the "job" as your responsibility...it's your managers.
Yours is working to a reasonable standard for 5 hours.

My job has been exactly like this since I started 4years ago. I get in at 8 and all the full timers are either sorting thier packets or tieing up and I walk up to my empty frame to start throwing in. Then when the driver turns up to load the bags into his york you get the 'why are you so slow' treatment. Infact I have to prep FASTER than full timers in order to catch up yet you still get called slow.

The only way to deal with it is to relax and just let it happen. There is nothing you can do about it because you are being paid to work for your hours. Despite the fact that FTers finish an hour early and go home an hour early you have to work to your time every day and usually over. Yes everyobe should be treated the same by law but this sort of practice probally can't be challenged. Maybe it could be. It really feel like you are being treated differently.

The only solution is to cut off or claim OT. If they don't pay OT - I have no trouble getting it - then cut off. If they get funny warn them you are feeling harrassed. If it continues make notes get a harrasment form and sort the buggers out. A joke of a company we work for I'm afraid.
