tryed to get some po counter staff to join cwu, had some success but those who were employed by mcolls said they were told they werent allowed to join. obviously this is against the law, but has any one else heard of this or was i being fobbed off?

Ashamed to say but as a Union member why would any PO staff want to join the CWU? They get nothing except lose their jobs and take pay cuts more work and higher subs if they stay employed, a bit like letters. Thats what happens when Union bosses organise for you. :-( PO staff need to organise themselves not wait to be saved by those that dont care.

just spoke to a mate i left school with [34 years ago] he's just been made redundant after 34 years service with 1 firm. [stat redundancey] however hard we have it and our going to get it, it will be worse if we don't try and stick together. however poorly we feel served by our union leadership its down to us to change the regime at the top,not easy but what is? my mate would have liked some one to talk to when he was shown the door, being a union member you have that. on your own your isolated and easy prey to some horrible manager/owner. ps my mate said when he left he walked past the factory owners new masarati. i would have been sorely tempted to give it a size 9.

Where do we go from here? We know some things in the CWU are OK ish sometimes and work but also know we have a predatory employer that the top down style of the CWU fails us all with their empty words and rhetoric! They work with the bosses and we pay and that is a FACT we all know! What do we do? Our Branches are filled with careerists that make a living from us but do very little or nothing for us! The only thing to do is take over the branches by organising ourselves and not wait for the Union bosses to change what they are incapable of changing. The question needs to be how we change our Union to start working for us instead of the bosses in the framework we have now. I have my own ideas and have been a member of the CWU since i started and will be till at least the CWU cease to exist so what must be done has to be done in the CWU framework! How do others think this should happen or are other members happy to see their hard work go down the toilet? I hope for some interesting replies.

IANAL but my guess would be that if they are actually employed by mcolls and not RM, mcolls would not recognise the CWU as being the trade union for their staff, they would recognise whoever is the main union for shop workers.
