strategy if manager won't accept you cutting off?

Post by GHOSTman »

Had a situation today where the manager would not commit himself on the question ..."might not be a able to complete, so would like to work my contracted hours, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO WITH THE MAIL I MAY BRING BACK?....simple question....here are some of their responses...

Manager: We can't bring mail back, you must deliver everything.... Me: " You can bring mail back, it's an agreed procedure between the union and royal mail"

Manager: You must honour the USO. Me: yes, but what do you want me to do with the mail i may bring back.... :arrrghhh

Manager: I'm looking at the time now, you'll be alright, ect and so on for about 15 minutes. in the end he kind of agreed I should cut off at an agreed time, but i was left with the feeling I didn't get a cast iron answer to my question.

Waffling over....Any strategy's for getting a cleaar and quick answer to the cutting off question?

Don't take it out, leave it behind and just pester him until he tells you what to leave..............just don't take the piss or you will get found out and they will sack you over it.

ps. Make sure he records it in writing that you've asked for help, they have a process to use.

forget it ,you will NEVER get a definate answer from management as they know you can't finish but they cannot tell you that.what ever they say you should request them to put it in writing and see them run for the hills cos they will never do it.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

You tell him how much you think you can deliver, be fair as you don't want to look a wally and finish early. Then leave the rest in the frame. By the sounds of it, you've got a manager who can't make a decision, so make sure yov've got a witness or better still your Rep. There are docs on here that will outline the procedure in detail, if you follow these there's not a lot your DOM can do.

Remember you only have to work your hours, no such thing as compulsery overtime, you'll find more than a few threads on the same sort of thing, do a few searches, and good luck.

Be assertive...and have a witness... preferably the rep.
No more "might" or "could"....if you use these words it opens the door to "just see how you get on".
I will be cutting off.
Do you want me to take it all out and bring back what i can't deliver or do you want me to make a judgement and leave some here?
Either/Or...no in between.
If he waffles ask him if he is refusing assistance.
If he continues to waffle remind him that the clock is ticking and the cut off is growing.
If he questions how much you are leaving, tell him to make the judgement call but remind him that any excess will be coming back.
Stay calm...but stay firm.

Cheers FT, will use this advice. I like the bit about asking him if he is refusing assistance, as that is a definate tactic this manager uses. will use this to hone my cutting off procede a bit more. :chuckle

Am already following this route mate, have qualified in a trade, next step is to work towards reducing my hours at royal mail whilst building up my self employed trade. Hopefully if it takes off I can get away for good! Would be a shame to lose the banter with fellow posties but can't see me being able to stick this job for another 10 years.

This job, this company, are utter shyte. A working enviroment that does absolutely f**k-all for our self-esteem, gives us no cause whatsoever to think we have anything remotely looking like dignity in the workplace, and a management so crassly incompetent and cowardly, decietful, lying scum.

Bottom line is, if you cannot complete, you cannot complete, and as compulsory overtime is strictly a NO-NO, your manager is going to have to manage, for once.

You've had plenty of good advice so all I'll say is this - Don't tell your DOM that you want to cut off, tell him you want to work to your time or that you will be working your contracted hours. And then make sure that, whatever you do, you don't finish early. If you realize that you're going to finish even 10 minutes early - slow down. Too many managers fancy them selves as private detectives and they love a stake out.

Good advice la. This morning, on the 4th day of the newly revised job, me and my van sharing/loop partner left a whole stck of mail in the frame and told them we would not have time to deliver it. They weren't happy, but i'm not paid to care about them.
Did the job to time and got back and out of the place on time. They would rather you overestimate and go over your time by 10/20 minutes (when leaving stuff) than under estimate and finish 10/20 minutes before time. This is when you got to pace yourself, as to finish early will get you in the s**t, but working over for them, you're a mug.
As for the 20 minute break before you go out (like i have the time!!!) and then 20 mins out there.......bollocks. Its 40 minutes taken into consideration before the end of my duty. I see management described as 'lying scum' on here, but i truly think it ain't a case of that, i honestly think they are as thick as s**t!
