Got a new DIM straight out of RM Training School. Sadly but not surprisingly when I told him I wouldn't be able to complete, he said come in lets talk about this.
"You're not working to Royal Mail standards according to the Indoor Workload Tool you should have been out the door 35 minutes ago."
" I have to ask you if you can suggest any ways in which to improve your indoor performance to benefit your outdoor".

I could have made various suggestions once upon a time, but remember now the crafty **** can be recording. So kept suggestions fairly polite.

I am a relative New Boy, only joined in 1980, activist, and hardened picket liner, so you can guess how upset I was. Gutted.

I know that the I.W.T. prep rate is a guide only and no rate is agreed, and without a proper count they have no real clue of what you actually have got. But what ***** they are, I know this will come as no surprise.

Any sympathies?

One thing or maybe many things that surprise me about royal mail is that we are all different and we all work at a different pace. This is something that management seem to not acknowledge and turn to the computer for answers. We are all humans not robots and we all need to p*** now and again but they would rather you didn't p*** and just shut up, come in early, work over your time every day.

Doms are only looking after themselves and not YOU. Its all about getting that mail out the door, no excessive amounts of overtime, and lets meet those targets.

I'm soooo glad that the union signed up to the use of IWT and pegasus in principle without the performance perameters being agreed at the time. Then agreed with Royal Mail to bribe there members into voting to except it with cash lump sums.

No problem with that, however because you maybe slower than someone else
You should not have your workload adjusted to compensate, same as if u are over efficient
You should not be given more work also.

Simple really. If it's a 3.5, 4 or 5 hr walk that's tested to those times
and you are struggling to complete, then a good DOM would want to
Understand why? not just dismiss you out of hand

Well aint that typical of these two union leaders? They know that all of these agreements they come up with wont affect them. It just keeps RM bosses out of their faces and keeps them in their comfy office chairs in Wimbledon. :dcfo :ncfo :vcfo

“Over efficient” sounds a bit scary. A master race? Ubermensch posties, perhaps?

People work at different rates and if someone hurtles around like the proverbial blue-arsed fly and can knock a certain amount of time off the job then they should expect to have the remainder of their paid hours filled with additional work.

Thankfully, we’re not on piece rate work, yet, but paid for working a number of hours.

Should you have to take the work you can't complete home with you?....like homework?
Maybe you could bring your kids to work to help.

Standards have to be set at a level that is achievable for all......or standards have to be individually assessed and applied to each member and re-assessed on a regular basis.
That's the choices open to Royal Mail.

The problem with setting them at a level that is achievable for all is that the numbnut flyers see it as an opportunity to make time rather than a safety net for when they can't.
It's members taking the piss by cutting corners and going too hard that has brought us to this place...not the "slower" members who have at least had the sense to protect their job.

It would help to have some assurances from HQ that senior Royal Mail managers are aware that the Indoor Work Tool is not a performance management tool.
