Our rep told us about a meeting he went to yesterday with The DOM, planner and Area Manager bloke.

The DOM had asked for some new mech-mail percentages and totals from The Planner to see which walks needed more/less IPS.
The planner handed over a sheet and the DOM looked puzzled and asked.

"I don't understand why the walk-spans are longer now than they were 6 months ago, why's that?"

The planner replies: "That's because I input 2010 figures this time for greater accuracy rather than 2009"

tell your dim to carry your bags for 4 to 5 hours a day and then tell you mails dropping off, im taking out over 8 full bags where as years ago had about 5. there all the same brainwashed.

It's the same in our office more mail more bags,But mention this to the gaffer and he says no your wrong it,s just THICKER.This is just one of many reasons why I try not to talk to managers they have a compulsion to speak a complete load of arse.

i've heard the managers at our office say it so many times aswell. DOM as a chart outside his office for us all to see and the figures (mail) are down every day compared to the previous week> wot a load of bull. taking more bags out now than ever! managment amaze me!

I'm pretty dim but if mail volumes are dropping so dramatically, why are we bothering spending millions to automate? Wouldn't we save more money simply by the natural fall-off in work?

How so? If he put in lower traffic figures that, has the effect of increasing delivery spans.
Thats entierly consistent with what RM say about falling volumes.
Which is not to say that RM are telling the truth.

If I was debating the number of mail items with our gaffer and he said 'they're just getting THICKER', my first response would be
Look, stop changing the subject. We're not discussing the decline in intelligence levels of the typical RM Manager ....

less mail means less ips
therefore room to increase delivery span (larger % of your 8 hours)
ie make your round bigger!
the falling volume lie could still be alive.

the only mail thats down is the amount that goes in those red boxes that r peppered around the streets hence the collections being cut have u not worked it out yet

Its difficult to tell either way, if the mail went up 5% one year, you wouldn't notice, equally if it went down 5% you wouldn't notice.
Over many years, it is possible to tell, but the problem is that our delivery spans have kept increasing, so we carry out more bags, which can disguise what is actually going on with mail. The mail is definately getting bulkier, but that doesn't mean there is more of it. One thing for defo is that packets have increased substantially!

my delivery points have gone up from 500 to 700 and even if the mail has gone down by 5% my delivery points have gone up by 40%.
