Royal Mail eases off over London job losses

Royal Mail appears to have backed down in the fight over job losses in London—at least temporarily.

Following a convincing strike vote by postal workers, bosses last week agreed to meet the union for talks.

They had previously insisted they would close the Bow Locks and Nine Elms mail centres, and the main central London delivery office, without any further discussion.

Declarations of solidarity from postal workers across Britain had rattled the bosses.

In line with a decision at last month’s CWU conference, many regions of the union declared that they would not handle any mail that bosses diverted from London.

Senior activists said that they would not stand by if any of their members were disciplined for upholding the policy.

Talks between the union and Royal Mail are due to conclude on Monday of next week.

But, say union activists, it is vital that postal workers in the capital remain prepared for action.

I guess they need more time to work out how much of a back hander Ward and Hayes want before they turn a blind eye to the closures/compulsory redundancies and recommend it to the members as a good deal!

Sorry i may be cynic here but i'm pretty sure leopards don't change their spots. Once its legally impossible to strike RM will be back to business.....compulsory redundancies.

And I could happily read it all night. Now of course Vince has waved the big stick - strike and we'll hammer you. Makes you wonder why there wasn't more made of the "special relationship" between the CWU and Labour when they were in power to reverse the already anti union legislation. I just wonder what "positive expectations" are coming out of the hat this time.
