Advice on Customer Harassment please...

Hi, I'm covering a round occasionally, but I know it well. Apparently one "gentleman" has had missdeliveries, and came in to report it.
Recently, I was on his patch, and he saw me, and went..."Totally Ape" on me, in front of a local resident and his son.
This was after personally apologising to him, even though I know the problem he's getting are not entirely my fault.
There's was shouting, ranting, raving, bad-foul and abusive language. giving the "V's" repeatedly, and he was making repeated masturbatory motions towards me too.
( If it wasn't so serious it would be quite funny!)
He also made fun/mockery of a minor physical Disability that I have.
He was totally out of control, aggressive, confrontational and literally in my face.

I, on the other hand, was self-controlled, restrained and was only able to verbally defend myself, but without shouting, swearing or use of insults etc.

I have reported it personally to a supervisor and to our Union Rep by text/e-mail but have not seen a manager or asst manager.
I've also let the local cops know, as he was totally out of control and may have other mental health problems that I'm unaware of.
He could do it to a paperboy/girl, DHL, TNT or other delivery personnel who make Human mistakes.
I'm ringing the Citizens Advice Bureau today, as I feel the comments on my Disability is against possibly illegal.
Any advice welcomed please.

The usual procedure in our DO is for a manager to write the individual a letter warning him that he persists with
this behaviour then we will no longer deliver his mail and he will need to collect it in future. This has worked for us
in the past.

there is no way that you should put up with that type of behaviour from anyone full stop.as said in other post your manager should wright to him a say that anymore harssment and he will have to pick up his mail from the office.allso you may want to say to your manager that you feel under pressure now and may need some time off work to recuperate. but just remember the bloke is a f###### d####

i would treat this just like a dog attack! i would tell my manager i feel my safety will be compromised if i deliver there again and would refuse to go there, not just for the safety aspect but to teach the twat a lesson as well!

I had this happen to me 3 weeks ago, I phoned security up, and they in turn got in touch with dom, and said to take me off the walk

while out delivering last week, the owner of the dog was out doing a paper delivery in another road, and the dog who was suppose to be kept in or if out would be kept on a lead was free to wander up and down the road, unbeknown to them i took picture's, but as I am now waiting for result of being conduct coded for cutting off due to being late out of the office while i had to write a reportfor dom, have no hope at the moment of anything being done properly by RM management, they will not back you up

I would be tempted to report it to the Police!

I too would use the dog attack procedure.
He made threats, therefore you feel your safety is at risk. Tell your manager you are not delivering to that house.
I also believe it is your right to do so, RM can not force you to do anything you do not want to do.

I have done this 3 times now with people who have nasty dogs, I refused to deliver until they had made other arrangements.

And yes, I do believe making fun of any form of disability is in the same class as making racial remarks and the police should be involved.

Hi all, thanks for the replies!

Latest Update: Local cops visited him, told to curb his behaviour etc. He never denied anything, so I wasn't making it all up.
CCTV at his facility being turned to "target" his property, to ensure no further events etc.
Manger told him not to harass staff and to contact Cuctomers Service if he gets further problems. Mail to be retained at office for him to collect.
Disability people told me he "could possibly" be done for Hate Crime for mimicking my Disability. I'll think I'll keep this course of action open to me for now.
SO...OVERALL, a good result! Just have to ensure no more delivery problems for him to moan about.
Wish I'd have filmed it, it would have made me a fortune on Youtube.

NOW...How do I solve the problem of the "Hand Lady" who only puts her hand out to grab packets/parcels/sign the PDA on the same estate???!!!
( Locals say she totally Naked behind the door, so...maybe the "wind" - wink, wink - can push open the door.)

if it continued i would be in fear for my safety and unable to deliver ti his or his neighbours homes
pissing of his neighbours can do wonders for an attitude adjustment

Been given two suggestions,

1. Very shiney shoes, and check the reflection with my foot at the door or,

2. A long stick with a mirror on it, like the Army/SAS use for bomb searching.
Problem is, what if there's a "crack" in the mirror?
