why later start times ?
short and simple,on 36 hrs a week in our new revision my start time has gone from 0600 to 0700 and finish 13.12 to 14.12.we have the majority of mail in the office by 07.15,i have a life outside of royal mail and high on my list is having a family life eg picking my son up from school and soon my daughter as well ,my dom has really pi**ed me off about these later start theres no need for it,i thought royal mail are supposed to be family friendly,if our revision goes ahead i only have 1 option finish to my time.affraid there are so many suckers in my small office loads come in early ,some are runners others need a zimmer frame,i prob think i will be just about the only one in our office to work to time ,affraid to say i just dont care any more the job is a complete joke .RUINED RUINED RUINED

Re: why later start times ?
Always someone worse off than you mate. Our PTers are starting at 09.45 and finishing at 15.45, and a couple of times a week there's a collection on the end finishing at 18.00! They used to be SA but no more! :
That's definitely going to muck up your day!
In answer to your question, we've been given many answers, none which make much sense. Must be saving money somewhere along the line surely!

Or give someone with nothing to do, something to do, by dreaming/planning crap up like this.Must be saving money somewhere along the line surely!
I can see no real reason to start as late as we are either.

Re: why later start times ?
Why? its because the RM has been told to do this by the government in order to create an opportunity to develop an early delivery service by a private company!
Customers want to receive post early in the mornings, Royal Mail won't do this so sooner or later a private company will.

Re: why later start times ?
I believe it probably boils down to something as simple as stopping Night Shifts, and their extra payments, and Stopping 0500 starts with their extra payments.
Add to that No Payments for Bag Drops, God knows how much they are?, and the fact they're now getting collections done at Normal Rate & NOT SA. Plus IF everyone's taking all their packets with them they don't have to pay anyone to take them out on Over-time. Ching..Ching...Ching.. Jackpot!

Re: why later start times ?
I think it's part of a future casualisation of the workforce.
It's much easier to recruit and retain on what most people outside the business would call a normal 8-4/9-5 attendance pattern rather than the early start patterns.
The easier it is to recruit...the more you can drive down wages.

Its paving the way for walk sequenced mail to arrive in your office. There will be no sorting in the morning so you can come in later prep your delivery and go and have a longer delivery span too

Re: why later start times ?
I realise that the mail will be sorted later..BUT couldn't RM, as the All Knowing Postal Giant that it is, manage to get a 24hr head start on this sorting business? Then we could get out early and it wouldn't matter what time the next days mail turned up because it would be ready to sort, nice and early, the following day!
Obviously to simple to work!

That comes down to one factor....how important is Next Day Delivery?Dorset Plodder wrote:I realise that the mail will be sorted later..BUT couldn't RM, as the All Knowing Postal Giant that it is, manage to get a 24hr head start on this sorting business? I honestly don't think it's anywhere near as important to people as Royal Mail think.
The company wastes a fair amount of effort and resources getting a first class letter from one end of the country to the other by the next day....does anyone other than PostComm really care?
If we were not tied by Next Day Delivery things could be much better for us....but do we want to sanction another downgrading of the USO?
It's certainly worth thinking about.....

Absolutley right Dorset. The main reason for our overtime is the DO send out a sweeper van usually arrives 9am-9.30am, with non sequenced mail, mainly advertising crap which could be left to the next day. It adds a minimum of 30 minutes on to our indoor work. If they allowed us to sort this the following day I would say overtime would be nearly wiped out.

Re: why later start times ?
how is important the next day delivery service.
if we lose this how many other jobs would royal mail be able to get rid of.
with all these changes like starting times, royal mail always have a hidden agenda
starting times should never have been changed. as for contracts of 20/30 hours with part-timers
this should never have been agreed.
working at royal mail is a full-time,as for the part-timers they dont deserve the s**t they put up with.

Re: why later start times ?
i agree with most of your comments folks, the thing royal mail are missing is CUSTOMER SATISFACTION,1 customers on my duty STILL want there mail EARLIER.2 RESIDENTIAL customers are NOT bothered if they receive mail on a SATURDAY.like an earlier post said another company is going to come in and do earlier deliverys and take our customers away.i remember royal mail saying they asked customers are you bothered when your mail arrives customers replied no,ANOTHER RM LIE,JUST LIKE THE COLLEGUE SHARES SITUATION.

Re: why later start times ?
bulk of our mail arrives at 5 and we start at 7.10 except tuesday when its 7.12! those with children to pick up from school finish on their time and the dom employs every form of royal mail management skill, bullying to persuade them to work over.the obvious solution would be to go back to an earlier start but that would involve a admitting a mistake has been made so i can't see it.Pat Ostman wrote:Or give someone with nothing to do, something to do, by dreaming/planning crap up like this.Must be saving money somewhere along the line surely!
