Yet another 'cars on delivery' question

Ok, here we go again....is it acceptable if you are on a van delivery duty that if no RM vehicle is available it is ok to use a private car for 'operational needs', one of our lads who hasn't been with us long was told to jump in with another bloke in his car who would do the driving whilst he delivered! He was told he had no choice because it wouldn't get delivered otherwise and that would 'flag up as a failure'. Now I've no idea if the driver has business insurance but would the passenger have been covered? We haven't had a revision it was done just because a van couldn't be found!!

I kid you not, I was speechless when I was told this, bloke uses his car for all sorts, picking up mail from other offices, delivering late specials, going out to break downs etc and now delivery driver when they can't get a hire van! Dom bloody loves him! Will I go out on delivery in his silly little car? will I f##k!

Rep was present, I suspect that if it came to light the dom would say he had no knowledge of it as he didn't work that day and the driver took it on his own back to use his car?
I told the lad that he should never never use a private car on delivery, he didn't know any better being a bit green.

What really scares me Postman is what if there was an accident! The lad probably thought he was doing the right thing!

If the driver doesn't have the CORRECT Business Insurance for that type of work (what you can do does vary depending on what you've told your insurance provider), then not only is the passenger not insured. But neither is the driver. More to the point: The driver was, and is (if still using the car for business use) driving ILLEGALLY and if reported, will be charged with driving uninsured, and failure to provide a valid insurance document (it's invalidated during use which it doesn't cover, so it doesn't count). A total of 6 points, plus fine, and will be considered a "high risk" by insurance providers. Which will put the premiums up.

However. If this person IS properly insured, then there's no legal problem with doing that type of thing. Although there is a moral problem, considering the current problems in RM.

Seriously though Luddite nothing surprises me anymore! I suppose this guy is on a PT Temporary contract and is trying to impress your manager because he thinks he's going to get a job out of it?

He's on a 30 odd hour contract been told he could become a manager if he shows willing!
I asked him if he had taken out business insurance and shown the manager the certificate to prove this, he said he had not as he was only trying to help!
I asked him if he had informed the passenger that he was not insured, he said that we had to get the job done!
Now to be honest I couldn't give a flying f##k if he gets nicked, broken into, drives into a ditch but I do care when he and the manager tell a young lad that it's ok to go on delivery in his car!
