my mum s getting mail for the person who used to live at her address and sends it back but keeps coming again she has rang up is there anything she can do by having only hers and my brothers mail delivered to her i have heard and seen special insturction cards please help this is quite distressing for a 70 year old as these are debt letters

I only just started, but one of the cards I have is about the same. Dead sticker anything with this name.

Mail should be delivered to addresses not people.

Special instruction cards are a relic from the past, (when the Company gave a s**t about the mail recipients); Do not use, read or adhere to them.

It's both the recipient and the senders problem, not that of the delivery personnel, we are allowed to redirect mail before delivery and return if posted back endorsed accordingly.

Cross the address out, write 'gone away' on it an put them back in the postbox. We then send them back to where they came from (assuming they have a return address) and they in theory take you off the list. There is often up to a 3 months lead time between a company starting an advertising campaign and you receiving the letters so it can take some time. Also, the company may have sold the database to others so you would have to be removed from all databases.

It can take some time but 90% should stop coming within 3 months.

But the machines that sort the mail will just work on the bar code and keep sending it back the the office, best just to ask the postie to return them before they are posted (usually works but some will still slip through).

Try the mail preference service it gets rid of junk mail mailsort etc. Just return to sender the stuff she is getting at the moment eventually it will stop.

I don't think you can do it by phone anymore. Write to the Delivery Office Manager and tell him you only want mail delivered for such and such a name (or names). He should then ensure that a special instruction card to that effect is included with the redirections/instructions for that delivery duty. Any mail for other names should then be endorsed 'gone away' and returned to sender.

I didn't think there were any 'special instruction cards' any more, just Redirections and Keepsafes.

I'm afraid royal mail don't see your mum as the main customer,they are paid by the business's sending the mail
I used to mark up 'gone away' mail before delivery if I was informed by people like your mum that the recipient had moved etc. but was instructed by my manager that I'm not allowed to do this as royal mails policy is EVERY letter has to be endorsed by the householder as gone away BEFORE I can send it back.
The problem being the small .1% of householders who lie to the postman telling them "this person has gone away" when in fact they have'nt,ends in the paying customer complaining to Royal mail the postman's not delivered the mail to where THEY'VE paid for it to be delivered.
Having said all this I would try ringing up your local delivery office and explaining the situation and seeing if they could do something they shouldn't.

This is a grey area in law, it was always believed to be illegal-- but again, if it has the correct address on it, and as the mail is delivered to that address, you can open it. This was estabished some time ago--obviously, if you know the mail is actually for someone next door or whatever, then morally you should not do so---
