Calling all Bognor Posties

Were about to have a resign for park and loop and manager are using the recent 'success' at Bognor DO to illustrate that our transition will be smooth and straight forward.

However i have hear rumours that most posites have been retuning at post 4pm at the office.

Can any bognor posties comment on how the revision has gone?

Posties have been ordered off their bikes in a major shake-up of mail deliveries around Bognor Regis.

The traditional sight of the men and women on their two-wheelers will become history by mid-summer.

The radical changes will also see familiar posties moved from the areas and residents they have got to know so well for as long as ten years.

Homeowners have reacted with anger to the alterations.

Communication Workers’ Union representative at Royal Mail’s Bognor delivery office, Paul Mountain, said: “All the bikes are going, which is not ideal.

“Most of the staff are not happy about it.

“But it’s all part of a national agreement and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

The scrapping of the red and white bikes follows a national deal about two years ago between Royal Mail and the union.

The change will begin in Felpham village, Middleton and Barnham from May 9.

About four weeks later, rounds in the town centre stretching out to South Bersted and Aldwick will switch.

These will be followed by Pagham and other outlying areas another month or so later.

The replacement of the cycling posties will also see staff numbers at the office cut by 15 to 103.

The new routine will see post within a mile of the Clarence Road delivery office delivered on foot with a high capacity trolley weighing up to 105kg.

These have been in use in the town centre for a couple of years.

Addresses further afield will be reached by two posties sharing a van.

They will then use smaller trolleys to cover specific areas in loops returning to the parked van.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We will be making changes to our delivery practices in Bognor, Middleton on Sea and Pagham as part of the ongoing modernisation of Royal Mail across the UK.

“This is vital for safeguarding the future of Royal Mail as a business and for the one-price-goes-anywhere universal service that is valued by our customers.”

The changes would still mean daily mail deliveries in the Bognor area, he said.

Been doing the parl & loop 7 weeks now.....its a right mess!! start 0630..sort till 0715....prep till 0815.. what evers left leave till next day..re-di's..then bag up have 20min break then out at 10...bak to office 1358 .have 20min break... finish 1418.
we have people in at 0000-0800 to prep the mail we left the day before, so ineffect we're delivering mail a day late all the time ...disgrace.

45mins sorting, only 1 hour prep then 1hour 45mins for re-di's and break must be a light walk!

If you go on the CWU website and and look for you could send an email to the Rep in Bognor I am sure you will have your questions answered without outing Bognor members? if you are from Pompey ask your drivers to ask on the gate when they deliver or email r.harris@solent-cwu.org (the dep branch sec.) and i am sure she could help or get the info you need?

It looks like our revision has been shelved indefinitely after the disasters at Dundee and Dunfermline. I think I saw somebody from Dundee posting that they have just cleared the backlog from before christmas.

I can fill you in with regards to Bognor.

Half the office started park and loop on 09/05, at the moment we are allowed to come in upto an hour early and book it, also we don't have to do any sorting just prep.

Is it working? Short answer no, first week most where getting back around 3.30-4pm, this week much the same, maybe a little earlier but if you add in the fact we arnt doing ips and coming in early you can imagine how bloody awful the new walks are.

you are digging your own graves for the sake of ot which proves it wont work and your still not finishing on time
what about prep pt duties oh wait their all on ot as well what will you do when ot is stopped and duties carved up again which will happen

Thanks for letting us know how it's going, in and hour early and no IPS (60-90mins?) so atleast two hours you will have to do in your normal hours once the dust settles, if i were you i'd start doing things by the book now otherwise it won't change and you will be stuck with it.

Just want to clarify the coming in early part.

Full timers can come in 30 min's early, part timers can come in up to an hour early, this is booked as overtime, it isn't coming in early and working for free. We also book overtime at the other end of the duty if we choose to stay out and finish.

In plain english its costing RML money and provingt hat too many hours have been removed.
