My union rep tells me that if (or more likely, when) we are privatised, the likelihood is that we will be given 3 months notice, paid off, and invited to reapply for our own jobs on a much lower salary. Anybody know if this is just scaremongering or is it the kind of thing that is likely to happen?

no-one knows its all guess work, that could theoretically happen but the goverment is still going to maintain a majority share in the company so that would seem very unlikely to happen, but not impossible

any one hearing george osbournes pronouncements on employment law should be preparing for a much poorer standard of living.

I for one will not be re-applying to work in the postal industry, i will take the money to retrain and do something else!

I doubt they would risk it to be honest.

Surprisingly they are actually going to NEED the main Royal Mail hub of current delivery staff who have all the local knowledge crucial to keep the network running. They will also want team working in groups where an experienced member of staff look after the team of casual workers who will be next to usless and try to steal the mail.

Without our experience the whole delivery network would break down very quickly and NO deliveries would get out .

Dunno if it's true or not. But scaremongering claptrap is something I might expect to hear from a DOM...

It is unlikely that our basic pay would be targeted first after privatisation in such a confrontational manner.
It would be much more likely that MTSF and pay protection,supplements and allowances would go first probably for the "offer" of a lump sum....it would be a take it or lose it anyway offer.
Basic pay can be devalued easily with pay freezes.

Aye it's shocking. Especially from a union who have looked after us so well lately. I often think - when I'm out delivering 6 or 7 d2d's for a grand total of £8 a week (£20 delivery supplement minus the £12 early allowance we used to get) instead of the £60-£70 I would be getting under the old system - god bless the union for recommending this deal. And while I'm on the subject, we had 3 or 4 strike days last year and went back because the union screwed us again. Considering the amount of money we pay into their coffers would it have been too much for the union to give us some kind of strike pay - even if it was a nominal sum. If they had given me a tenner a day they'd still be over £150 up on what I pay over a year. And before somebody says 'If you dont like it, leave the union', the only reason I stay in it is because one of these days it's going to be the only safety net we've got.
