We have at least six vacant duties in my office they are vacant because people have left the buisness for one reason or another does any one know how long a duty can be vacant for is there a time limit we have seven full time reserves and 3 ftc's i am just going off my head swinging from one walk to another each week and wonder if i have any justification in asking for the vacant duties to go up for signing is there someone i can complain too.Spoke to dom he tried to tell me that he couldn't put the up for signing due to 2010 equality law i asked him if he was taking the P***.

Re: Vacant duties
What about if you're covering a vacant walk? say for nearly 2 years, do you have a claim to it or does it have to go up for signing?fishtank wrote:It's supposed to be no longer than 6 months according to the Way Forward.doyourd2d wrote: does any one know how long a duty can be vacant for is there a time limit

Re: Vacant duties
You have no claim to any duty that hasn't been offered in a repick or advertised internally.Biker Mouse wrote: What about if you're covering a vacant walk? say for nearly 2 years, do you have a claim to it or does it have to go up for signing?
14.4 Where a full-time post is advertised internally, it will be available to all full-time employees and part-time employees, who have opted for full-time employment, in that resourcing unit. The posts will be filled on the basis of ‘most senior individual’. Where a part-time post is advertised internally, it will be available to all employees as above and filled in the same way.
14.5 The resulting vacancy will be temporarily filled by a reserve, a surplus employee, a transferee from within the wider resourcing area or another resourcing area or by direct recruitment in line with the process above.
14.6 When the number of consequential vacancies in the resourcing unit reaches 5%, or after a period of six months following the last such exercise (if earlier), the posts will be advertised in the resourcing unit, en bloc and filled on the basis of seniority. If this results in any further vacancies, these will be filled, using the same process as above.

Re: Vacant duties
can someone please tell me why it is not illigal ,that vacant duties are filled by "the senior man" regardless of suitabilaty this is discrimination.the law states that everyone is entitled to apply for any position that they are suitable for and the position should be filled by the most suitable candidate..Not someone that has worked there the longest gets to pick the best job!!!! that is the same with re-picks being based on seniority and the clincher, if people have the same start date using date of birth to decide the "winner" .its an absolute farce.just because the union and management allow it to happen does not make it right or more importantly LEGAL.

How do you judge suitability in a non-skills applicable position?mr d wrote:can someone please tell me why it is not illigal ,that vacant duties are filled by "the senior man" regardless of suitabilaty this is discrimination.the law states that everyone is entitled to apply for any position that they are suitable for and the position should be filled by the most suitable candidate..Not someone that has worked there the longest gets to pick the best job!!!! that is the same with re-picks being based on seniority and the clincher, if people have the same start date using date of birth to decide the "winner" .its an absolute farce.just because the union and management allow it to happen does not make it right or more importantly LEGAL.

Re: Vacant duties
is that really your considered reply? it is the job of the manager to make that call then they live and die by there decisions.the problem with the cwu and royal mail is that they live in the past and the union are just as much to blame for this as the management,we have managers with no managerial qualifications who would be laughed at if applying elsewhere for positions(especially true in our office)its happend twice and the manager got promoted internally to the planning team.but by going along with antiquated agreements the union just compound the problem employment law is employment law this type of backhand agreement has to stop this is 2011 not 1945 when it was all the boys together

Re: Vacant duties
Of course it is a considered,if a little flippant reply.
You berate seniority but give no serious alternative other than let the manager pick and choose who he wants for the job.
Are managers really qualified to do that?
We have six and i could drop any one of them anywhere in our delivery sector and i could guarantee they couldn't find there way back to the delivery office.
Are managers above favouritism?,,,do they hold grudges?....would you like to start a poll?
How could you possibly seek engagement from the staff during a revision if they felt that management were waiting to carve up the duties as they saw fit.
You haven't really thought this through...have you?

Re: Vacant duties
as i have said i dont feel the managers are qualified, but look at it from business point of view.revisions all over the country.re-pick after revision.the cost of training after re=pick! how is that good business it will cost millions to re-train people on different duties just so the senior men can have the cream jobs because they dont like how there new rounds look.its cobblers .repicking on seniority is like 100 staff walking into tesco in the morning and them deciding what jobs they do all day..it doesnt happen because the managers decide the duties of each and every one of them!

Re: Vacant duties
It's not against the equality act 2010 to have seniority, it is classed as an incentive for people who stay in the business not as discrimination against new starters.

Re: Vacant duties
Again like most who attack seniority you cannot come up with a viable alternative.
Using Tesco as a comparison is just silly...telling staff to go on Till No4 instead of Till No5 is not a difficult managerial decision to make and is unlikely to lead staff to believe that you were favouring one, held a grudge over another or were just plain incompetent.
