RM business or institution?

Post by peterhazell »

worked for rm now for just over 2 years now, whilst i understand seniority comes before ability, what i dont understand is being sent out on walks that i have no experience on and end up bringing half the mail back, when we have staff in the office that know these walks , are we in the business of delivering mail or giving certain staff an easy ride at the expense of cost, it seems to me this will be the demise of rm with managers with no guts to make a business decision on a daily basis, instead of keep someone happy decision . I wonder if other companies act like this,i hear people moaning about where there share money has gone , probably on OT paid , for cut off bags, RM wake up its a business not a club.

How do you think they got to know these walks peter?....and what good to Royal Mail will you be if you don't?
If the same experienced guys are constantly doing these walks what happens when they leave?
Now if you were to say that the level of training in this company is piss poor i would be forced to agree with you. :whistle
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

So what you're saying is that you should get an easy duty and others should get the difficult ones that you don't want??

I think you misunderstood what i was getting at, no training, dont give a toss attitude from above , if you dont invest/train your staff the job doesnt get done properly, how many time does a delivery fail before its looked at, or doesnt it matter?

sorry to say this but after 2 years of been there you should be able to do any job in your section or round the office unless its a driving job or a farms job

What happened to learning a walk, I've been on countless walks that I've not known without training and sent back a few odds and ends perhaps but never half the mail.

Don't go criticising people that have done the job for years when after two years you obviously can't do the job you're paid to do. Everybody has to learn walks, we've all been through it, get used to it, oh ye don't forget to get used to the couldn't-give-a-s**t-attitude from management too, been that way for years, never changed, never will.

And yes, generally RM/management don't give a toss and do throw you in at the deep end on numerous occasions, in the words of a typical RM manager "if you don't like it, leave and find another job!!"

Flats - not your problem, had the same problem myself in the past, try a couple of times with buzzers and the like if no answer then endorse as such - report it to the manager the day after and wait while they either try and resolve the problem or push it aside and just forget about it. It's the owners of the flats that should ensure reasonable access.

In 2 years, assuming I'm still employed in this industry, I'll be working for a bunch of arseholes hell bent on making a profit for themselves at the expense of staff (which are expendable, hence the large number of PT-ers these days) so no change from what we see today or what we saw a few years ago....

I can see where you're coming from, but with DSA and a completely useless out of touch regulator, RM are f****d.. We are expected to provide USO whilst remaining competetive - solution; s**t on your staff, bully them into working like dogs over their time in the hope they don't book etc, tell them they are crap and too slow and threaten them with the good old conduct code - and god knows how many other tactics all for saving a few pounds!!

just because people don't agree with you peter doesn't mean your point has gone over everyones head.please try and remember that there are thousands of postmen/women with far more service than your paltry 2 years who remember what this business was like before the robber barons took over and have seen it all before.

They got to know them by doing 2hr 30 walks between 7am and 9.30.
If it took 50% longer they would still finish by 10.45. (£hr 45 delivery)

A newstart now is doing a 4hr walk between 10 and 2pm
If it takes 50% longer they won't be finished before 4pm. If you then factor in the extra fatigue associated with a longer delivery, greater dehydration and greater stress (both physical and mental) they could be out on the street for 7hrs. You don't learn a walk like that. You learn that RM is run by knobends.
And then the next day you get up and go to work to not learn another walk.
