So you have had it easy for 20 years and now your compaining as RM are trying to make you work the same time as everyone else 2days a week?!
I mean we have people loosing their jobs all over the country and people being screwed over left right and centre over OT. Sorry if that seems dismissive of your problem but really in the grand scheme of things it doesnt sound so bad! This is Royal Mail the good old days are gone iam afraid!

being senior should give you the choice of where you deliver, not an easier delivery, as i see it the manager has done the correct thing giving you more work as you as you admit have more time that others to be able to complete it, i'm 23 years in and fulltime btw

if not then what a prat for even posting this, what reply did u expect.u have just said the other lads have heavy rounds compared to yours so the extra bit u taking out may balance it up a bit.just cos u got 20ys in dont mean u do less work than everyone else.
i cant wait to see your face when p+l comes in,been doing it 3 weeks now and its a beatch,we will never make it to retirement

I'm a bit on Jim's side here, how many of you would take extra work because the manager 'thinks' your duty is easier then some of your colleages.

If you have time to do it...you have time to do it.
Jobs changed for most of us now.
It's not about how many calls you have or how many somebody else does just whether it's reasonable workload inside your contracted hours.
I might be wrong but i don't think Jimmy is saying he's struggling to get done...just that other have it easier.
Not much of an argument in the grand scheme of things in my opinion.

Re: Lapsing makes seniority null and void so whats the point
I see Jims point as it’s a real wind up when your supposed to break up a lapsed duty fairly yet you see other getting away with half your workload, no one would like it.
When we lapsed there was always arguments which got close to punch ups so we started rotating the parts of the delivery on a weekly basis. It quickly became clear that certain parts were a real peach and one terraced road which I always looked forward to my weeks turn only took 8 mins.
Seniority really does not mean a great deal these days as iam 23 years in but my walking round takes 4hr to 4hrs 50 min and normally iam one of the last to finish. In fact on sat I was the last to finish.
Jim if you think your going to get a better deal driving then forget it mate. In one word PARCELS. Driving / walking deliveries are the worst of both worlds in my opinion as you still have all the leg work to do but also the hassle of tracked parcels and pda’s which black screen you on the doorstep

Re: Lapsing makes seniority null and void so whats the point
You seem to be under the illusion that seniority gives you some sort of right for an easier time. Obviously you deserve some knocking off IF you're doing more work than anyone else, but if indeed your round is easier ( I'll assume maybe it is, seen as your 20 years in and picked it for some reason or other. ) then the extra work might just be validated
We have this problem at our sub based office. There's 8 walks and 2 are renowned for being easy to breeze round, even though they have 600 DPs, and 1 is known for being a complete and utter ballache as its all uphill with no terraced housing. Obviously the 2 easy rounds are owned by guys that have been there for 15+ years and the 1 difficult round is owned by a full timer whose been there for the least amount of time.
So when it comes to lapsing ( which is a rarity nowadays as we almost always refuse and slowball to our times ) segments of a walk are given out equally, which i think is wrong anyway. The guys on easy rounds in theory should be taking out more, and the guy on duffer walk shouldn't really have to take any out at all. Yet because of the seniority rule, the 2 chaps pick the terraced bits which add up to like 15 mins extra , even though it's 100 DP a piece. And the poor guy on duffer walk gets the posh estate with only 40 DP's but ends up taking him 20-30 minutes, maybe more as the area is known for its packets.
The point is, in my opinion, Seniority SHOULD basically be nulled in terms of work load and THAT IS the point. You're all paid to do the same time anyway. If you want a preference to working area, then fine, but all walks should be equal. It never really works out like that we know, so you get innevitable preferences to duties, but if your lapsing is more than someone elses for a reason, Seniority isn't an excuse.
As a PT Floater i'm rather indifferent, As i'm rather sick of the whole seniority card that get's played by people. Sick of getting shifted about to different offices week by week, sick of being taken off a walk i like, just because someone with higher seniority from another office moves in and takes my place. Long story short, your seniority gives you the right to at least have some sort of familiarity in your job, and that's about it.
Just think, you could be like those floaters you see in your office, getting s**t on week after week, s**t which amounts to more than having to do an extra 10 minutes here and there.

Re: Lapsing makes seniority null and void so whats the point
After a brief read of this thread to date, a few of things immediately spring to mind...
Seniority should not mean that you have an easy walk, although more often than not it does. Seniority entitles long serving posties to choose a duty, rather than having "Hobson's choice."
As of April last year, "job and finish" is supposed to be over, we are each supposed to be allocated enough work to take us to our contract finish time. If not, managers are not managing!
You really are not helping yourself are you, if you are not taking your entiled paid breaks and yet still work ~7.5 per day? If you took the breaks you should be taking, you could justify a reduction in the amount of lapsing you are expected to do, which goes back to "managers should be allocating enough work to take you to your contract finish time."

Time to stop digging, Jim.
I think Stevo302 and ILoveMYredTROLLEY have, pretty much, got it spot on.
By your own admission -

“Well yeah, coz ive got 20 years in, and the 2 in question have 6 and 8 , so obviously my rounds a bit easier - 1 took a really bad round coz he had no round and wanted stability, and the other took a very heavy round coz he gets like £1500 tips at xmas coz its dead posh."

Normally yes but i must be stupidJimmy Carr`s laugh wrote:if you pick 1st your going to pick the easier round arent you?
I actually choose a full 4 hr round because i got so SICK of all the hassle and fighting which lasping brought. Even before you got out the door it was like " ive prepped for 10 mins longer than you so you should take 20 more calls" I hated it
When i signed and came off driving i could see plenty of deliveries left that were only 3.30 hrs max but i KNEW that lapsing would come back at some stage and these knobs now getting back at 11.30-12 noon will have no argument not to do it.
We found this almost impossible with fixed sections as no one would admit their section was any easierJimmy Carr`s laugh wrote:I just think it should be an equal split
The hardest bit in my opinion was the prep as you tended to do more than your agreed 30 mins. The delivery sections ranged from the already mentioned 8 mins to a pig of detached houses which took 30 mins.

Re: Lapsing makes seniority null and void so whats the point
When we did lapsing in my office. I always had an extra bag of crap to deliver each day, the guy next to me had a bundle.... such is life!
Now we have had the revision we all cut off at the same time so alls fair I guess!
TBH I think i'd rather go back to the lapsing and maybe make a few minutes a day than have the revision, unfortunately that's not an option.
What you need to remember is we all get paid to work up to a certain time. Forget about what the bloke next to you is doing it's no ones business but thier own.
Work your hours and relax as when the revision hits you no one will have it any easier than anybody else!
