It happens everywhere nowadays. The job has just got worse and worse and people dont give a s**t now. Turn up, work your hours and go home. Dont bother with what anyone else does just look after number 1. Take a look round your office and think if you've got a problem how many would support you if for example you threatened to walk out.....i'd guess there are alot of mouthy ones who always give it large in the canteen or whilst doing ips but when you need them to take a stand you'll never see them for dust.

When I joined Royal Mail nine years ago we would start at 05:00 ,sort ,then out about 07:00 ,deliver until 10:00/11:00.
Upstairs into the rest room/canteen for crap tv /darts ,snooker and coffee and a laugh, then back to cutting and tipping and sorting,gathering up our mail and throwing what we had sorted in for the next day.
The cameraderie was great and everyone knew everyone.

Fast forward to now.

We have starting times all over the place and most people do not take their breaks , the pressure is immense and there is also a lot of bad tempers going around ,mind I also have noticed that the levels of lunacy have increased probably in an attempt to surmount the pressure.

I am just glad that I have been around when the the job was more fun.

Very hard to get any esprit de corps going now. Especially when you come into work and some "colleagues" are nearly ready to go out the door, bundling up as you're collecting your mail! Some mornings you just feel like bouncing their heads off their frames!

I just console myself that I'll never need to rely on these assholes in a life or death situation. My advice is buy an MP3 player put on your headsets and ignore the bastards!

I think a lot of it has to do with the pressure of the workload which we face these days. Ten years ago you had a Manageable amount of work with a delivery which took around 2 hours so you felt more relaxed in the mornings. These days the mech trays / boxes just keep rolling in and the more they stack up the more people feel the pressure build up. No one feels they have any time to help a fellow colleague anymore.

The answer is to try and not race the clock but pace yourself for the whole day ahead.

your right. materilism is god now. when i started postman lived in a council house or a 2 up 2 down, but were proud of their job and the freindship they found their. and as for scabbing it was un heard of. now its every man/woman for themselves. i could weep.

it is sad to say it, but nobody will stand up together, then there are always some fooker up there on his own trying to fight a losing battle with four managers, everybody listens in but says nothing,

its also sad to say, but i only go to work for one reason, the money, certainly dont go to socialize

I remember when i started 16 years ago,If anyone was struggling getting out in the morning someone would always jump on the frame and help out,Pass another postie delivering and u had finished then you would always help them finish.

I dont think its a case of im alright jack,I think Royal mail have put so much pressure on people that they just dont have time,Alot have families,Part time jobs and dare i say it a life outside of royal mail.

I think most offices now who have made the changes are delivering right up to their time or close and alot of others over their time,So if someone is doing their hours and getting out before someone who is going to struggle and go over you are rarely going to see them jump in and help,Possibly because they have little time themselves and need to get done,Me and my mate are always one of the last out and nobody mucks in to get us out,Nor would i expect them too.

Our rounds work,Can be done in the time and i enjoy the job,This doesn't mean i have loads of time to spare(Far from it) The later start times have cost us a small fortune in childminding fees,So my finish time at 2.45pm...........2.05pm without a meal break means i can get home and pick up the baby at 3pm and get the eldest from school at 3.10pm.

The old days we had god knows how much time to kill so was no hardship helping anyone,Sadly those days are gone,So has the spare time.
