Duty Repick Question

I'm still fairly new to royal mail having started in early march as a pat timer.

The DO that I work at has a duty repick on 31/05/11 and I'm assuming that when that happens being one of the most recent starters I'll end up with what everyone else in the office thinks is one of the worst duties.

Now I understand that this is how royal mail works but it seems pretty stupid that A) there are obviously duties that are easier than others as certain people are already talking about which ones they want to get because it means they can finish early and B) why put a new starter on a duty that they are going to lose within a couple of months when it would surely be better for us to continue to improve in an enviroment we know.

You won't even get a duty, you will be a reserve who will probably be on a different walk every day.

you will have a start time a finish time and a meal relief time on what ever duty you do. stick to these and life can't be to bad. can it?

Yeah you will end up reserve which is not so bad you will get moved around alot but you will also get to do the easy rounds and if your lucky some old timer might go longterm sick or leave and you get put on their walk

I get where your coming from with the bad and easy rounds,we are told all rounds are equal which has never been true least in my office i'm hoping park and loop will level this out abit and stop people finnishing early.End of day there will always be crap walks nobody wants to do.

As said before you will be a reserve ( unless you put your name down for everything, and there is something no one wants ). However it might help to change your perspective, for example I work in a fairly middle / upper middle class area ( stockbroker belt of London ), and it's nice to do walks there, but you often get shed loads of packets, ebay, catalogues, Saga, Sky, etc, etc, but in an area that is mostly council housing you miss most of that out, and it's only ropey when the housing association do a bulk mailing.

That's fairly simplistic, but even if you try and think of a walk with shops or pubs on it ( you could pick up a sarnie, or get an orange squash, or even use a toilet without someone going "OI!!! WHAT YOU DOING P*SSING AGAINST MY FENCE!!!!" ). Crap walks are crap walks unless you look for something that makes them better than an "easy" walk.

how does the repick work, i know its on senority but what about full time and part time ,you have got p/timers senoir to f/t does it have 2 seperate lists,as they would have to make p/t up to f/t and f/t down to p/t surely thats not right loseing hours , and can i ask when the maps of all the dutys are shown is there a set time before the repick starts.

i was for 15 years and then gat a duty and now my duty got done away with so am a reserve againg but i still fin on my time just cut off thats the only good thing to come out of park and loop no more run around for me just work my hours and thats it

you are hopimg if you think park and loop will level out the rounds i would say it as deifinitly made it worse in our office soom walks under 3 hours and some over 5 hours impossible to do before there only used to be max 1 hour between worse and easiest now i would say there up to three on a bad day i know this sounds ridiculous but its that bad the only advantage on a bad walk is that you do less ips but you still have to do prep and then the extra walking its hell at the moment hope we get a revision of the revision,and i would rather be reserve any day than stuck on a big walk they are literally impossible..

It's abit different in our office, as we work a cycle of 5 weeks on 1 week off, so they have float sections of 5 walks, ur still a reserve but atleast ull constantly rotate between 5 deliveries.

even so i still ended up with nothing and am now gonna be doing whatever, have been for the last 2 days and it sucks, i was on the same delivery for over a year and i dunno if this sounds weird but u kinda grow attached to it as u know the ins and outs of it and obv the people you deliver to.

but yeah its not gonna be easy in the slightest when your put on areas you don't have a clue about, there should be ways of how you tie each walk up in the log books on the fittings imo for the people who are reserve, instead of having to ask other colleges who for the most part dont want to help you or aint got a clue, and you just end up working blind and hoping for the best, not really fun when your stuck with a s**t load of mail.

I was asked a question today regarding resigns.

In the Wayforward Agreement did it, or did it not, state that a duty holders walk need not go into a resign if the duty holder did not wish it to?

I thought that all duties except specialist ones ie callers office, had to go in the "pot".

A duty will go into the pot if there has been a major change on it. Can't remember if its a 1/3 of the duty changing and it goes into the pot or a 1/3 of the office changing.

Oh dear you obviously haven't been at RM long! its gamesmanship.... no REAL postie would divulge what walk they want to sign for coz they don't want anyone else going for it.... any talk you hear is just diversionary!

being a res. is pucker over a year or so you get to do a lot of duties, covering holiday leave and sickness.If you get put on a pig of a round you know you wont be on it forever,And when you land on the easy est round in the office for a couple of weeks. lovely.
