non union members

[silly suffolk]

i often have run in's with non members about their selfish attitude, and willingness to take union rate's of pay but not pay their do's. but then other union members tell me i'm a dinosaur and these people are free spirits. please tell me i'm in the right.

Dont worry we wont get arsey.

Unions are there to defend workers rights and just as workers have a right to join a Union, they also have a right not to. I suppose as a CWU member you should encourage them to join the Union, but also defend their right not to.

i bet these non union members are hoping the union does something about the payment for colleague shares,
but wont strike or work to rule if the union calls for it, but take any monies, wages rises cut in working week 40>39 etc

Well if your in my office I would take that bet. By no means are we at 100% recruitment yet during the 2007 and 2009 strikes we were 99% out - not bad with 250+ in office.

A strike breaker is low...a strike breaking union member is beyond comprehension.
Without the backbone to stand up and fight to defend his terms and conditions nor the courage to leave the union in case he gets himself into a bit of bother.
Not a brave soldier....nor a brave conscientious objector....just a coward and a shitebag.

have the feeling a large % will support union this time as they are all feeling peeved off with th way things are going now

I agree that seniority has been manipulated to achieve 'divide and rule'.

Management have sucessfully created a 'middle class' of senior workers who benefit from getting away with doing less than their fair share of work and get to pick the most popular weeks to go on leave. At my place, seniors were getting more than their fair share of overtime and the higher grade workers (all senior) were being allowed to do lower grade overtime even though there were plenty of lower grade volunteers available.

The previous rep was a senior who looked after his mates and it took a great effort to oust him. Thankfully, now a 'donkey class' sympathiser is in post, the Union has started to regain respect. We have brought in an aggregate system for allocating overtime and made it clear that the Union's principles prevent it from being used to help individuals get more than their fair share of benefits or do less than their fair share of work.

Management have started to withdraw favours and the favourites, who are unaccustomed to hard work, are now bleeding through the arse.

Now that suffering has been fairly distributed, we all realise we are underpaid and I believe there will be great support for IA if we are not offered a decent pay rise.

Sounds like a typical story of Reps who are not "Big Enough" for the job. It takes a certain type of Individual to take a position of Equality of Fairness in the face of Temptation.

In a previous life I was on one of those "Workers Committees" (Not Union) and every meeting I had to ask the same questions that my colleagues had asked time and time again. "We've explained this to you before, why keep asking?"
I simply pointed out I'm here as a Representative of my colleagues, and it's them that want to keep asking!

I think a lot of Reps forget that the abbreviation stands for REPRESENTATIVE: "Person chosen to stand for a group".
Doesn't say anything making an easy life for yourself.

Well I left the union after the 2010 fiasco and vowed not to return until Hayes was outed. However, as he wangled himself in for another 5 years I have had a rethink.

I have recently rejoined the union purely to give weight to my support for our local rep who is getting it from all sides at the moment, despite trying to please everybody!

I totally disagree with CWU leadership but believe that any local rep that puts in so much effort deserves some backing so that's what I am doing.

As for members/non members I feel it is up for individuals to decide what's best for them. I don't care that someone out of the union benefits from the same pay as union members. I have also seen non union members give thier full backing to strike action when even some union members have broken the lines!

Judge people on thier actions not on whether or not they pay £3 a week to the union!

i believe that after a democratic vote for i/a everybody should abide by that decision if it is in favour or not. as for non members, i just can't reconcile my self with their way of thinking. an age thing perhaps on my part. at least members who scab pay their 3 quid a week. better than nought, just, non members , in my opinion should negotiate their terms and conditions on their own, with some dreadful manager who is used to treating staff like dirt.

Totally Agree Suffolk Once there's been a Ballot I'll go along with the Majority's decision. I thought that was what ballots were all about?

Some members seem to think that they only have to go with a decision if that was the one they voted for!

We have staff that are in the Union but insist on coming into work regardless of YES votes! Don't know why they bother with being in the Union.
