As a part-timer, I find that my contracted hours result in low weekly pay. One solution to this seems to be to work my day off, but I have some reservations about this.

I am aware of the need for rm staff to work to the rules i.e. starting at official time and taking your break. Basically I am worried that by working my day off I am undermining my full-time colleagues and acting as a quick fix for management.

Opinions are welcome.

Seems it's the way RM want it. You can't really manage on part time money so you have to do the overtime when you can. If this undermines the full timers then it may help to rid them, which seems to be what RM want in the present climate. When I started on P/T I was hoping I would become F/T, but I don't think it's going to happen. I am considering looking for a full time job.

Nothing wrong with working day off what you need to find out is which duty you are covering, when you know this find out how many hours the AWD(actualworkduty) covers useually either 7 or 8 hours if the dum won't pay the 7/8 hours for the duty then tell the dum were to go.

In our office the strike breakers are trying to cut each other up to work their day off. So if it is offered to you and it stops one of them take it.

Its good to have a conscience and not want to undermine colleagues, but you still have to live and I wonder if they would give you the same consideration, if it was the other way round.

jamie mate, you gotta look after yourself and your family..as stated it's great that you think of the f/t colleagues but if you don't do it,theres always someone willing to instead..if not in your office than a neighbouring one..

If day off working is needed then staff shotages must be happening.

I work my day off on a regular basis as do many other FT and PT staff.

hi mate like everyone else says if you need to or you want to and you can work your day off do it because pretty soon we will all be part-time if closure and lateworm have their way thats why we must ALL (yes even you strike breakers) stick together and fight for are right for full-time employment because i feel sorry for part-timers as i could not survive on the miserable wage that you work nearly as hard as a fulltimer for. :cfo :lfo

Jamie If you need the money you should work your day off as RM will just use casuals or a scab to cover it instead.

I appreciate the fact that you are concerned about your full time colleagues and people must take into account that overtime done on a large scale undermines full time employment and ultimately drives down wages and conditions.

Keep fighting for that full time job and you will get it eventually.

They are getting desperate at my place one guy a FT who is off on 1 days holiday tomorrow has been offered an extra days holiday if he comes in just to throw his walk off and 2 days if he goes out with it.

Hopefully their is a fair choice - here there is a lot of favouritism for overtime - and some part timers who absolutely milk the system - because the hours they are scheduled to work are in their favour when it comes to being handed overtime.

I've just watched a film about Wal Mart and they purposely understaff their stores to keep the wage bill down, and they class full time employment as 28hrs does it sound familiar to anyone
