CWU Website : Letter to Branches : WTF?

Post by maninred »

We all know the mess that we have to deal with on a day-to-day basis so it is always good to get the latest from the CWU online:

LTB 398/11 John O’Groats to Lands End – Non-Stop – For CWU Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA)
LTB 384/11 - Agency Workers Regulations 2010 - BIS Guidance – CWU Submission - 18th April 2011
LTB 394/11 - Postal Constituencies Conference Agenda Pad 2011
LTB 392/11 - HEALTH AND SAFETY ENFORCEMENT AND FUNDING OF THE HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE - EARLY DAY MOTION 1513
LTB 391/11 - Workers Memorial Day - Government’s Webpage Goes Live - including Further Health and Safety At Work Information:
LTB 388/11 - Workers’ Memorial Day - TUC Events List

I am sure that all of these are noteworthy causes BUT........ :arrrghhh

Agency workers is a big issue for our comrades in telecoms, BT loves to have agency workers long term so as to avoid the costs of proper directly employed staff.

Conference pad; do you not want to read the motions to conference as those that get voted in will and can lead to a change in CWU policy.

Workers Memorial Day ; remeber the dead fight for the living is the purpose of that and it is in the contex of workers who have lost their lives through lack of H and S by their employer.

HSE funding; make no mistake the Tories and the bosses dont like Health and Safety as it eats in to their profits. As a political levy paying CWU mbr I expect the CWU to take a interest in this issue!!!

It may seem trival at face value but issues in RML are not the be all and end all of what the CWU deals with. We are the CWU these days not the UPW/UCW!!

Of course all additions to the CWU website are written and added to the website by Dave Ward, his officers and the PEC. :arrrghhh :d'oh!
Of course the above are the be all and end all of the CWU and all the other officers/staff in other departments are simply a illusion.

Of course we dont have a telecoms side to our union who put up info on the CWU website that is of relevance and important to telecoms members, I mean how dare they do that when there is lots of ongoing issues with RML/RMG management .

How dare Dave Joyce and his team have the audacity to put out some important and interesting h and S info.

Shame on you all non postal deaprtment officers reps and staff.

Whatever next, youll be telling me CWU is not a union that organises exclusivley within RML.

I think the problem is that the CWU doesn't organise very well at all now.
It's focus is far too vague and far too political at the moment and it's resources are spread too thinly.
We are not a political union and cannot afford such luxuries...if people want to play politics let them join a recognised political party.
The union needs to go back to what it did best...workplace representation and leave the causes to those who know how to promote such things.

Aah

Im under orders to make it clear that the posts I make on RMC are my view.

Back on topic; if we need to bump up our industrial departments then we should look first to see if we are using our existing resources as effectivley as possible.

Sometimes the CWU do stray outside workplace/workplace related issues and I dont see the need for it, for example
LTB 126/11 Dangers for Binge Drinking - 9th February 2011 dont get it, why? If a worker in RMG or BT Group etc wants info on binge drinking its not exactly difficult to do so and also I think most people are aware that binge drinking is not a good idea. Most definetley not trade union issue!!!! The same applies to LTB 318/11 - ALTERNATIVE VOTE REFERENDUM – MAY 5TH 2011. A waste of CWU time and resources as its not worker/worklace trade union related. No doubt I could find a few more examples.

Politically the law sets out certain expenditure that must come from a seperate political fund, however is there scope to go above and beyond the law? Is there stuff thats resourced from the general fund that we could fund from the political fund instead? What do we want from our political fund?

Basically everything we do needs to be worker/workplace focused.

21 April 2011
LTB 0406/11 Justice for Colombia

No. 406 /11
Ref: GS 15.18
Date: 20/04/11

To All Branches

Dear Colleagues,

Justice for Colombia

Justice for Colombia will be holding a fringe meeting at the Bournemouth International Centre during CWU Annual Conference (Monday 23rd May). A visitor from Colombia will be present. Originally a teacher, Tarcisio Mora, is now the leader of Colombia's largest trade union centre - the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) - representing nearly a million working people. Prior to being elected CUT leader in 2008 he served as the director of the CUT's legal department and before that he led Colombia's largest trade union FECODE, which represents teachers. Mr Mora is the Colombian worker representative at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and also serves on several other Colombian and international bodies concerned with the rights of workers. In 1999 he survived an assassination attempt and since that time he has been permanently accompanied, whilst in Colombia, by several bodyguards.

In the interim, it would be useful if Branches studied the enclosed material and affiliated to Justice For Colombia.

Any enquiries on this LTB should be addressed to the General Secretary's Office quoting the reference GS 15.18.

Yours sincerely,

JOHN BALDWIN
Head of International Affairs
