tips on getting quicker?

hi there,

i'm a new postie on a part time contract.

i'm really struggling with finishing on time. as i only get one guaranteed delivery a week (other hours are collections) i'm finding it difficult to build up the experience/practise i need to come anywhere near matching the regular guy. the two rounds i'm trained on are cycle rounds (one is once a week, the other is covering on overtime if i'm offered), the reglar guys get them done early most days, i've only managed that feat twice in the 6ish weeks i've been at royal mail.

i realise it's not a race, and i realise it takes time to become efficient at this job, but any tips you can offer to help me speed up whilst on delivery would really help - somedays i have to cut it very fine in order to get back in time for my afternoon duty. i'm not under any particular pressure from the manager (although he is hopeless at sorting out the overtime) but i do find it very stressful some days.

Don't worry, it will come through time, just always make sure you do your job properly, and no cutting corners! And, accept that in this job, you will always be cutting it fine!

Ask for a motorbike
Only joking just make sure you have your bundles in the right order,letters are turned over to show where you have packets,R/Ds etc.
Dont try and rush about as you will end up making mistakes which will make the walk even longer or even worse you could end up having an accident,like a trip or something.

Go in 2hrs early for FREE.
Don't bother prepping 1/6th D2D leave them for the floater.
Dump all missorts on next door's frame when he's gone to the canteen.
Don't bother re-directing mail just deliver them.
Bin all dead letters without endorsing the items.
Use your own car as a van.
Run on delivery.
Jump over walls.
Door step packets.
Sign yourself for all deliverable recordeds & specials.
Dont take a break.
Bring mail back for far places pretending you didn't know where it was.
Bring mail back for whole street pretending dangerous dog loose in street.

put flats, behind letters and dont rush about, as it does take its toll on legs, and never go back early.

You could take a "E"tablet. I'm pretty sure you'd be round in next to no time. (I know someone who done this), completed 3 hour delivery in 2 hours .

Pay a colleague to deliver part of your walk.
That's common practice where I am.

Wouldn't you have to keep stopping to give your customers a hug?
And then stopping to have a drink?

Check your mail as you walk, and have it all ready to post as soon as you get to the door.

Don't run, but as you learn the walk you will naturally start to go quicker and learn the best route to take.

Never cut corners on stuff you should be doing properly, but constantly look at how you do things and see if it can be done in a quicker, better way.

Don't come in early, because it's a false economy and you aren't actually doing anything quicker.

Other than that, the best way to improve your speed from the sorting of the mail.

Sounds like this is from personal experience.

A few extras here.

Walk over any gardens.
Post any missorts, pretend they were stuck on back of other letters.
Peel recorded stickers off and post, its quicker.
Dump crappy small parcels onto the driver, if you have a keen driver then hide them behind big packets and scarper quick.
Speed on the road, cops generally leave posties alone.
If anyone tries to call or speak to you, just make out you are deaf and keep walking.
Drop your bag wherever there is a loop, less weight = quicker.
Anything left at end, post box it. Write wrong address as though customer put it.
Above all, smile. It costs nothing and a happy worker is a fast worker!!

I'm a newbie as well, not sure why but tiny delays mutiply really quickly. Had the same round for 4 weeks now and
almost getting back 40 minutes early which means lunch and cut off or some d2d then home.

For some reason if i'm 20 minutes late out the door, even if the mail is light it means about an hour extra on the round, must
be something mental as I now know that by 11:00am I should be on x road, which means one hour to do the next two
roads and time for 1pm specials, but if you're late then it all f***s up somehow.

Well I'm only going on hearsay but I believe I am quick enough.............in fact some have said too quick
