ILL HEALTH RETIREMENT +lumpsum, any help please on how much I would get. I'm 45 and I've been a postman for 28years now. ATOS have just told me I cant work at the job I do. I've facet joint problems in spine, my dr says it is through work. Also I had a royal mail rta accident 14yrs ago causing back problems. The royal mail paid me £2000 then as it was their fault. Does anyone know if I get just the 34 weeks + holiday pay. Is that it, or do I get lumpsum pension aswell? Im confused with it all. I know you only get pension straight away if you cant work for 10 years. ATOS did tell me to put a case in with union for back injury as it seems to be work related so any help on that aswell would be great. Thank you, Rob.

You will get 34 weeks pay, plus 12 weeks pilon, plus any holiday pay earned. Pension frozen until age 60.

i hope you can sort your health out it sounds really bad.
I just saw an atos physician, his report was ok.
unfortunately, the job does overtime wear you out, its essential to have a good diet, most posties look so stressed, without the proper nutrients, the body cannot hadle it.

Thankyou for your help, just seems a bit sad that you give a company 28 yrs service, and they pay you off so little esp when DR says your back is injured due to the work you do. :(

Also depends on whether u will be able to do other work as to whether you get your pension immediately or not. If you've not been offered this, it's often a point of appeal. I'm think PILON is 9 weeks no matter how long you've been there + holiday pay, can't find the document atm, but if u search the downloads section here u should be able to check that.


A few points, the lump sum is tax free. It is however counted as savings when it comes to benefits. And as I've just found out it is be counted as voluntary should you wish to claim Job Seekers Allowance.

It's 9 weeks pilon till you've got (I think) 10 years in. Then it rises to 12 weeks. Trebor wont be able to take his pension early for another 10 years under the present rules. However, if he is in the union, he should see about getting Simpson Millar to make a compo claim for him. If he's leaving now, he can stay in CWU as a retired member while his claim goes through.

The recommendation would therefore be ‘Retirement on ill health grounds with immediate pension’.

As I read it, the 10 year thing only comes in when you can't do other work. ie. If ATOS say option f as above instead of

d or e. which is Ill Health Retirement with Lump Sum

TBH the best thing you can do is download the document and have a read of it, and see what applies to you

Thanks again to all people who replied. seems as though i will only get the 34 weeks plus leave and 12 weeks pay. still seems rubbish for 28 years service, allso who will ever employ someone now who has facet joint problems who has been told by DR's and specialist that it will never get better and can only have steriod injections in spine to ease pain :(

Tried acupuncture? It doesn't hurt (honestly)
