Travelling time

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I did use the search function but the results were overwhelming.

Simply put, I ride a bike to work, which I don't use for delivery. For that I am conveyed to the start of my duty in the standard manner. Of course this means that I have to return to the delivery office to pick up my bike, and to return any undelivered packets etc. Is this time built into my duty or not? My manager insists that Royal Mail can effectively 'post' me anywhere, and that my official duty time ends at my final point of delivery. It is then my responsibility to return to the DO for my bike (or car) on my own time, and at my own expense?

So if my shift or duty ends at 14.20, where should I be at 14:20? In the garden of the last house on my walk, or back at the office having pouched off?

I think if this was made clear it might make a number of people who use their cars on delivery think again. Always assuming we don't have to make our way back on our own time, that is...

Now it's usually a local thing whether you can pouch off on the street. Eg post office or second bag boxes or you have to return to office.
Duties should have time built in at end to pouch off.

Of course whether they should and whether they do is two different things. My manager has told me to leave undelivered items in my 2nd bag drop. Hey presto, problem solved for him. However this still leaves me three miles from my base (and my transport home), and now on my own time. There is no incentive for anyone NOT to use cars on delivery if travelling time isn't built into each walk.

The question really is, If I'm sent on a delivery that ends some distance away from the office, am I simply abandoned there at my own time and expense? Does the CWU not have a definative policy on this?

your duty ends once you are back at the DO.
we usually allow 5 mins to put wait noted items in room of doom etc.
im sure teebs or fishtank will post an official document up in due course.

always remember, if in doubt ring the CWU. thats what you pay your subs for

Know of nothing which states we must finish at the DO.
And since the end of 2nd deliveries don't know of any obligation on RM to return us to DO if it's our regular office.
But if there is I am sure your right Fish will post it

why dont you ask the driver who accelarates you to the start of the walk if you can place your bike on top of drop bags and when you jump out the van take the bike with you.it means your bike will be nearer you when you finish your delivery and you wont need to go back to d.o

Two reasons - 1, that's another example of delivery staff excusing RM their responsibilities. I'm not bothered about returning to the DO, just so long as it's not on my time.

2 - My bike will probably get stolen/and or vandalised.

This is just another element of selfish car users ruining the job for people such as yourself. Work does not, cannot and should not end 'on the street'.

your on pay until you get back to the office,sometimes it can be 30-40 mins when i get back to office,after last letter 10 + mins walk to bus stop then 15 mins bus journey back then 5 mins walk back to office.

I don't know about a 318 - to be honest I'm looking for a universal answer to this question. They could put me on any duty really and then where would I be? Travelling time either exists or it doesn't. manager says it doesn't - insists that we all finish on the street. I'd like to hit him back with something official.

NO they don't....well other than don't use your car!
I took this up with my area rep before, his answer.....you finnish on the street.

You should have 15 minutes pouching off time built into your duty, although that may not be enough time to return to your office.
