Working In Other Depo's Continuously..

Hi all, new to the board.. (Postman 6 years)

Just wondered what the rules are on being sent to work at other offices,..? My manager tells me i have to get there and back by myself (i do not drive) and he can send me wherever he chooses, whenever he sees fit..

This is causing me so much stress, as i live in Bristol and the offices here can be miles apart, some needing two or three buses to get to and from, and i missed my daughters parents appointment because i could not get back in time.

Someone else in the office said to speak to my union ref because it is Royal Mails responsibility to get me to the other offices and back within my day shift, can anyone else confirm if this is true..?

Would just be nice to know what the rules are..?

From what i have read on here before, you are supposed to arrive at your own depot at your normal start time. It is your DOM's responsiblity to get you to wherever he wants you to go. You are also within your rights to be retuned back to your depot at your finishing time.

Well i've just spoken to my union rep who tells me that Royal Mail are allowed to send me wherever they choose, and are well within their rights.. He says i'm employed by Royal Mail not the delivery office i'm at, so if they need me in another office they can just send me there and do not have to provide transport either way..

They can send u to another office, thats for sure
but, they can't force u to work before / after your time,
also, they can't force u to pay your traveling expenses out of your own pocket to get to another office (someone correct me on that if i'm wrong),
i hope u have a backbone and inform your gaffer u aren't finishing after your time, which will mean wherever u are sent, u will cut off to get back to the office .
and can anyone confirm u can cut off intime to be able to return to the office where u are based, or is it where u have been sent to !

It was a rural job i was on yesterday, took me over an hour to walk home, and i would have no problem telling them straight, i would just rather not do that without all the facts..

So is there anywhere i can look at the rules regarding this, i'm not sure i still have my contract, but i imagine that wouldn't be on it anyway.

Your rep is talking bollocks, if they want you to work at another delivery office then they have to get you there, inform them politely but firmly with a witness that you are happy to attend other offices but you will arrive at your normal office for the start of your shift and need to back at your normal office for the end of your shift, you're not interested in o/t, if they insist you are wrong ask for a grievance/bullying and harrassment form and speak to your area rep, not the idiot in your office, if you get any problems personal message me and I'll put you in touch with my rep, he's very good and I'm not far from Bristol.

Keep calm and inform them you've no interest in wokring in other offices but you will if the need arises but you must get me there and back within my duty time, they'll soon get pissed off with it and start on someone else, seen it all before so just stand your ground firmly and politely with a trustworthy colleague as a witness.

I'm now told that if they give me advance warning i have to arrange my own transport and Royal Mail only have to take me to another office if i turn up at my depo unaware, if that makes sense.

So if they say, right next week you are in Long Ashton, i then have to go straight there and therefore have to work til 2.20pm as per usual at my own depo..

Ok,you've been in the job for 6 years,what is your normal duty,a reserve there?
I would say despite the fact that you could go to office x for a week you are based at your current office so what i posted above still applies.

Lenny this is FACT mate . This is what I was told by a GOOD manager at on of the offices i was SENT to .

For this example your hours are 9 - 2 . Half hour break you finish at 1.30 .

Goto your office at start time even though your being sent out . THEY will arrange a taxi for you .

The drive takes you half an hour to get there so obv half an hour back . Taxi leaves office 9.15 and arrives 9.45 .

You know you finish at 1.30 and it takes half an hour to get back to office so you MUST leave at 1pm . No ifs or buts as your not doing overtime .

This has worked for me many many times . MOST times i dont get out the other office with my mail until 10.30 KNOWING im only out till about quarter to 1 .

I've not read the docs posted by Postman but from speaking to the current & former reps in my office

1. You turn up for work in your office even if you get sent to other offices.
2. RM will provide transport to the other office
3. Do what you can (which usually isnt much if u get sent far)
4. RM provide transport back to your office for your finishing time. (or later if you want o/t)
5. Dont forget to take your break.

Postman, calpsy & the rest are right.

Your rep doesnt know his stuff. My rep is a lazy good for nothing who scams everything for himself but at least he backs the office when the dom tries anything.
