Van driver security issue??

Last month had a problem with priority service items being stolen from my vehicle, I know for a fact I locked my vehicle aswell as it having the auto locking system on it (new transit) I always use the fob, been through all the rigmaroll of being suspended for 2 weeks, had several interviews with managers etc, ended up with 2 year suspended dismissal.Been through the appeal process (still awaiting outcome) but then last night same thing happen to another driver with the same type of van from a different area, driver knew he'd locked his vehicle but priority items stolen! What I'm wondering is do we have a possible security issue on our hands?? If so how many members of staff have had to go through the same process as me to be blamed with driver error when this could be the work of professional thieves or even worse an inside job?

I'm currently still on 2 year suspended dismissal because of this and if the same happens again i'll be out on my arse! has anybody else had this issue?? have heard of several more possibles in the area.

Don't know where in the country you are but we had a guy last month who had the same thing happen to him,£6000 special was taken.

I know a few years back that with a radio scanner connected to a laptop you could grab the feq of a remote key then transmit it back to open the car. Think most fobs are rolling feq now though

Ive known drivers to leave the van un-locked and have mail stolen only to find a quite spot on the way back to the office and smash the window. TBH it was something i would have considered doing.

If its a static frequency on your key it is serious security issue but i'm sure RM know this

Their response will be, as per the security handbook thing that we all signed (well, we did at our office anyway) that you are meant to check the door is locked by trying the handle and to not rely on the fob.

They'll have you for it one way or another!

Yeh tell me about it! and yes I do check the drivers door aswell as using the fob to lock the vehicle, they did try to say I should check every door but when I pointed out that most vehicles are central locking nowadays and you only really check the dorr you have come out of and assume the vehicle to be secure from that! It was much easier when we had the sherpas and manual locking system as you could only open and close with the key then!!!

The security handbook is funny in itself. The amount of checks that they want us to do and yet I bet they don't count it in the duty time when they run it through the computer! Scan area to check for dodgy behaviour, if in doubt, drive around block and look again. Get out of van, ensure all windows are closed and get item/s to be delivered out of rear of van. Lock van checking every door to see if locked. Scan around again to check for anything dodgy. Deliver items whilst keeping van in view at all times. It would've taken me about 5 minutes per parcel I delivered lol

Forgot to say, it could possibly be a wonky door sensor unlocking the doors after you've locked with the fob because it thinks one of the doors is still open?

Delivering to most of the places I delivered to I had the same problem! I'm not driving the van up people's driveways!!

There is no security issue with leaving the van out of sight if the van is locked and all mail is secured in the rear.
It is at least as safe if not safer than leaving mail in a pouch box which obviously isn't going to be in sight.
You should of course think about where you park and avoid alleyways and hidden spots.

I do think though that a lockable box for specials in the van would have been a sensible idea.Fair enough the oversized specials wouldn't fit but generally speaking your average opportunist thief isn't going to want to lug a giant box away.
We used to have them.

Be easier just to section off the front of the vans with a cage and lockable door and keep the special there and the normal in the back??

i was told the other day if you lock your keys in your car or van you can phone up home get someone with your spare key to push the electric fob near the phone hold your mobil to your car door and the infa red waves will open your car or van door how true this is i dont know but this could be a scam to get into royalmail vans if someone has the same kind of van be interesting to know if it works

they always have an answer to those pesky internet rumours
