shall i reduce my hours?

Post by veryn »

so the office i want to transfer to is offering me 27 hours a week. im currently on 39.

my current office is 30 min drive away ,i spend around£40-45 a week on petrol travelling there (£160 a month)

but if i go for the 27 hours, i wont be using my car at all as i could just walk/cycle to the new office. im not quite sure if that would balence out right if you know what i mean?

how much would i be earning a week if i took the 27 hours? lol i know im crap at maths!

they also said they always have overtime and i could make up some hours doing that? but i know overtime isnt always garenteed

what does anyone think? good idea? bad?

i will have to ask someone tomorrow but thought id ask here too =)

Is this like the "BUY DOWN" of hours ie: you get a one off lump sum to reduce them ?

I am interested is there is anyone on here who has reduced their hours but kept on delivery and do they feel any better for it ?

I did it and dropped to 30 hours for 4 years.

Felt better at first because of the later starts "Buy down for a lie down" was the phrase i coined.

Now because you start later than ever it really makes no odds.

I have just been made permanent full time once again,I work less being a full timer than i did as a part timer.

Feel better than ever being full time,I really dont joke when i say that either.

Part time workers are made to work alot harder than full timers,Fact in my office,Dont know about yours.

My advice,DO NOT DO IT.

Just bear in mind the unforseen consequences Veryn
You'll only get your contracted hours when you're on Holiday or Sick. Which I think is a bitch. Even if you've done loads of OT previously. :mad
RM don't have to pay as much into your Pension, although your contributions will increase the more OT you work (which is a good thing).
And you can of course play the "PRO-RATA" game for all payments and bonuses. :arrrghhh

The Fuel angle sounds like a good reason, especially if you can walk to work. Remember you've got to earn that cash get taxed on it, then pay 20% VAT plus any extra Government hikes. And that's before our Middle Eastern friends start to screw us because they've got some war or other going on. :hmmmm Plus at least you can get to work if the car blows up!

Having said that I would stick with the extra hours losing 10 hours is going to be at least £70. Good Luck.

I think the 60 mins driving a day is also a factor :hmmmm Once again it depends what time you finish on your current duty, i mean if you currently make some time each day you could lose that on the move and be worse off.

I am not all that keen on driving long distances to work and my commute is just 8 miles so an hour would get me down. Guess its going to come down to the question can you afford to give up the money ?

A guy I know reduced his hours from 40 to 30, but seemed surprised to learn that any overtime he does now may not paid at overtime rate. He gets only basic pay rate on the first 10 hours. If he were to do more than 10 hours, it's only those additional hours that attract overtime rate. (Mind you, the differential between basic pay and overtime rate is minimal these days, it doesn't make much difference)

Looking further down the line, if you were on the 27hr contract and your office were to close, your VR offer would be 31% less than if you'd remained on a 39hr contract. Also, your RM retirement pension would be less than if you'd remained on a 39hr week throughout your service.

Food for thought.
