The courior three pages stating the same paragraphs about the "phantom shares" and how we are not getting any money, later on £69 million being spent on new London sorting office. What an utter waste of paper.

Its not great is it. The guy says he came from a management background and did not enter RM 12 years ago whilst in his 50’s so he must be on his knees by now. He does make some good points though but seems to miss the whole postcom and DSA element, which as we know has crippled the company.

I don’t think his right in simply blaming the lack of, or not willing to embrace modernisation as its far more complicated than that and can not be judged so easily if we are unable to compete on a even playing field.

People are always sceptical of modernisation. I don't think scepticism is entirely unjustified - for all the machinery and magicks, it's not as if we, the proletariat, are exactly experiencing a superior quality of life than before the modern era. In real terms, pay has dropped, struggle and strife have increased tenfold, and the world has grown more competitive. The new ways only make money for an increasingly smaller band of people, so why exactly would we be willing to embrace a methodology that is slowly driving us towards extinction? Embracing modernisation is a wonderful idea, if you're a sheep. If you want to let the next generation wander into an even worse abyss than the present generation. We can debate the rights and wrongs of everything, and whether the great techno-world is going to save us all or kill us all, but the facts are clear on this. Unhappiness, unemployment, value for money and quality of life are hitting new lows year-by-year and that is directly linked to the growing phenomena entitled 'modernisation'.

The old ways aren't some stupid religion that people subscribe to out of blind faith. They really were better, and fairer. They were the cornerstones of society and led to an inclusive community that was not merely self-protective. It also had an uncanny ability to be profitable and sensible all at the same time. There were no conglomerates, admittedly, but does anybody really think that was a bad thing? It's because of the contraction of the marketplace that prices are being driven up. If you rely upon a select group of brands to provide your necessities then you're driving yourself into a corner that is steadily decreasing in size. I don't personally want to come across as a technophobe, or the alternative - a modernisation-phobe, but I just don't happen to think that because it is shiny, well-programmed, and can do the job of two (usually at a cost per hour that more than reflects that), it is instantly better. I am the kind of guy, admittedly, who walks into a shop and steers a path a hundred metres clear of those 'self-service' checkouts. Possibly because I don't look at a world where machines are inflating the unemployment figures as a good one. Nor a fair one.

I just don't like modernisation. I don't mind computers and I don't mind mp3 players, but they are examples of recreational objects that have promoted and increased certain types of work throughout the entire world. Modernisation in corporate terms means redundancies, sackings, the transformation of the work-force, and families being shipped off to the poor house. All for the sake of a couple of £££s an hour. If everyone really wants to embrace that then that's entirely up to them. Personally, I am just sick to death of seeing television programmes, newspaper articles, etc., where stereotypical delighted worker number 1 is seen to hug the machine that has made his job easier - just before it renders his job redundant. I'm sure it's good news for engineers but they're not exactly the normal people like you and I who can't tell our arse from our elbow. When it all comes to a head, we'll be the undesirables with absolutely nothing to offer unless we go out and change ourselves all over again. I don't know about everybody else, but I'm not exactly keen to have to build myself anew when I reach my middle-age, simply to help another corporate fat-cat make as much money as is possible.

I'm not a revolutionary and I doubt I have the gumption to change the world, but I think it's about time my generation - i.e. the 18 - 30 year olds, woke up to what is happening in the world and began to take a stand for their rights. If they don't do it soon, they'll discover by the age of 40 that they don't have any. I know, this began as an anti-modernisation rant, but the world as it is isn't working for the normal, young people such as myself. All whilst the rich get richer.

"Were is their mail?" - well, we all know mail volumes are dropping.
- and where's their new uniforms ?
- and why do two postmen, each with a trolley, need FOUR vans ?   that can't be efficient.

totally agree with you taurus88.

The Star letter also made me puke.

As always a propaganda plug from the management, being very selective as to which letter gets the STAR treatment.

This guy from from Kent, whilst some of the content has some truth,
what he fails to recognize, is that IF the Union had embraced modernization earlier, then he would have either been down the road
by now, OR he would not have gained a job in the first place, as he so richly needed!!

There is a difference between making a business more efficient, and cutting things to the bone,
which is now taking place across the country.
It's all at the expense of loosing jobs, they state there will be no compulsory redundancies, well watch this space!!

I still think, the postal service is a public service and should remain so,
I dread the day when RM will be sold off, hopefully our union can convince MP's not to vote in favour.
If we loose then we are all doomed
