Funeral Day Off

Hi can you tell me my rights?Someone close in my wifes family killed themselves,I asked the Dom straight away if I could use my day outstanding to go to the funeral.The responce was that we are a bit short at the moment you might have to come in and then goto the funeral and then carry on with your walk after.My wife was devestated and she has had time off work with no problems.Am i supposed to go to the funeral and then leave my wife in tears to continue with my walk because I am not allowed the day off?I personally find that disgusting!!!

see if you can swop your day off 1st , then ask for special leave and if all else fails try family crisis day off as you need to support your wife

go to funeral and afterwards ring the office (upset) and inform them you will be unable to return.

i've just had a day off for a funeral. gaffer gave me 'special leave' no questions asked and still got my day off too!

Bereavement:
The special leave policy allows for up to one week with pay for the death of next of kin and blood relative, (spouse or civil partner, child, parent, sibling) and one day with pay for parent in law (or the equivalent in a civil partnership or longstanding unmarried relationship), or grandparent.
Discretion for additional time off with pay may be granted in exceptional circumstances. If the circumstances are not exceptional, any additional time off granted will be unpaid, or taken as annual leave.

Discretion for time off with pay, in circumstances where the relationship to the deceased is not covered by the above, may be granted if the circumstances are ‘truly’ exceptional.
If the circumstances are not ‘truly’ exceptional, any time off granted will be unpaid, or taken as annual leave.
Note that under the Employment Rights Act 1996 s57A, an employee has the right to take unpaid time off upon the death of a dependant to make any necessary arrangements only. The purpose of this leave is to make funeral arrangements etc and this does not give the employee a statutory right to take more than a few days off following the death of a dependant.

The granting of special leave in this situation is a)At the managers discretion and b)Most likely unpaid.
Having said that i would ask for his reasons for refusal in writing as i believe his actions are pathetic and the "too short notice" excuse doesn't wash....it's a funeral FFS and i've never heard of one of those that come with anything other than short notice.

Have found out from Royal Mail that manager is aloud to make you come in do part of your walk get changed go to funeral then leave your wife in tears then get changed and go and finish walk!!!!Thats official from the Family Friendly business!!!

What happened,you didn't do it did you.
I would lose the days pay and f**k them for any favours they ever wanted.

As it goes I had a bad chest for the last two weeks so I went to the doctors and he said I had a viral infection,He gave a sick note for a week so rather than struggle in work i'm off.For the way they treated me,they have to cover my duty for a week instead of one day!!
